Digitakt + Squarp Pyramid workflow?

Hi Digitakt/Elektron users. Need your advice…

I have Squarp Pyramid sequencer and want to add Digitakt…

Can I use DT and Pyramid sequencers together? Master/slave or?
I want to use DT/Pyramid with software. Ableton, Reaktor, Battery-3 and VSTs,
DT sequencing drums and sampling.

Is it a good idea? I love what videos I’ve seen on DT…Really great …can I do without?

Thoughts please?
Anybody using those two, or Pyramid with other Elektron drum machine?
Thanks

You probably can- though, sometimes there’s a bug where the internal sequencer will stop performing triggers when Midi is coming in.

Only way to find out is to try!

Yes you can.

Both ways are possible. It depends on your needs.

Yes it is. Or not. It could be a rather complex setup.

Lock up your room for the next few weeks an learn the Pyramid.

Yes, me, together with AR, DT and MD.

Thanks for the tip Ryan, sure is worth it.

Thanks a lot for a detailed information, really helpful…and encouraging…:grinning:
It’s hard to make decisions based on reading manuals and dreaming…

Was hoping it is possible, tweaking TD and sequencing with Pyramid and more once I get to know them both.

I’m definitely going to crack Pyramid…

Why do you say the software could be complex? I want to use Ableton as a platform, not (maybe not) record midi into Ableton. Trigger samples and notes in synths.

How do you use DT/Pyramid? I’m not asking for a tutorial

Well, I admit It’s totally crazy to run a sophiticated Elektron sequencer over an even more sophisticated sequencer like the Pyramid. This setup becomes alive in a non-DAW configuration with other synths which aren’t capable of sequencing on its own, like the Virus B in my rig. IMHO it is not very useful to tweak DT via Pyramid because DT’s origin workflow is far easier on the maschine istself. But - the Pyramid can overcome DT’s restricted pattern lenght and the missing song mode.

It is indeed a complex setup. You need to know your DAW, espacially its MIDI routing properties. You need to know your slaved maschines, their channel setup and their CC behaviour. You could easily get some unintended loops. If you won’t hear anything expected there are several sources of a potential issues - this implicates a very deep understanding of MIDI. But also a lot of fun!

Yes it is. But you won’t be aware if your decision is right until you have this maschines in your rig. After some years and an awful amount of wasted money you can follow your intuition.

Exactly, that’s what worried me about using one Sequencer over other…don’t think I will do that.
But I think something must be possible, maybe using them separately, if only ,l using the drum machine (DT) doing its tweaking…with the upcoming Overbridge…and Elektron always updates.

Thanks again

hi, i used digitakt and squarp pyramid together with ju06 and jp 08 …
it’s work fine (OS 1.03)
the squarp pyramid is master and synchro with digitakt …

Great
thanks

Sorry to Necro but i was curious if folks are still trying this and if it still is as complicated as some posts in here seem to indicate.

Not complicated at all, but it depends on the level of detail you need to achieve. If you use a lot of sound locks you might want to use the internal sequencer in the DT, but if you just want to trigger the DT from pyramid and automate some parameters, you can do it just fine from pyramid. DT doesn’t have the awesome euclidian sequencer the pyramid have, for instance, and by sequencing from pyramid you could very easily automate say a filter sweep over 8 bars or whatever, which would be quite inconvenient to do internally on the DT.

Thanks. Thats what i was looking to do. But i also like doing things on the DT like p locks on things like a snare hitting twice every 8th bar(does squarp do this?), changing the sample on certain steps, adjusting the bitcrush or od on different kick hits, lfo controlling the sample start on the hats…etc.

Id like to do a lot of the things you described on the squarp and then do the details i described above on the dt as well. If that is all possible, that would be awesome.

Nope,
there is no plocking like every second run or so.
Sadly I used the pyramid in the end for start/stop on the DT internal sequencer…

@BassesAndPads Good luck using both sequencers simultaneously. In my experience this becomes quickly a nightmare due to the rigid structure of the Elektron sequencer (only 1 to 4 bars patterns etc.pp.).

Count in the limitations of the hardware (only 8 voices), pattern change problems and similar and you’ll soon tear your hairs

I actually haven’t received my Pyramid yet (still waiting for it to arrive by mail), but I’m pretty sure I’ve read you can do p-lock style automation with it. You may not get the conditional trigs like with the Elektrons, but you can get randomization and chance through the MIDI effects, so not a massive loss, in my opinion.

Sadly you cant use p-locks like the elektron sequencer does, Elektron does the lock on one step and automatically goes back to the value before the lock, on the pyramid you have to do that on your own which is tedious :(…

Ah, yeah, that was it. I’ve seen people suggest Elektron style p-locks on the squarp forum. Would be nice if implemented.

Hi, do you have a Pyramid and Elektron? I ask because I have read a few people on the web who use the sequencers together and love it. Just trying to figure out the pitfalls you are describing. Here is a workflow example:

Make an 8 bar sequence with Pyramid. Maybe 4 on the floor type beat with evolving eucliadian percussion part - sounds come from Digitakt.

On Digitakt use Plocks to control the sound of different steps on the drums. Add extra % of wetness now and then…etc.

Is this all possible or what headaches would come from this that I should know about? The power of the squarp seems to be its ability to program Euclidean drum rhythms. And the power of the Digitakt is the PLock system.

I could always just sequence drums with the Digitakt and use the squarp to control the start and stop, send the clock and then sequence my synths with the Squarp and leave the drums to the Digitakt. But that seems like a waste of potential with the squarp.

Elektron, yes, Pyramid, no. But the same problems arises when you try to control a single machine with multiple other sequencers (like a DAW) simultaneously,

The problems start already here since the Elektron sequencer does only support patterns up to 4 bars. You can work around this by using 2 patterns on Digitakt, but then how to keep the track sounds consistent? When you change the sound in one pattern you need to change it in the other one, too (or copy it), to keep the illusion that it is one 8-bar pattern.

The “nightmare” creeps in with (normally) simple details like this. It’s not straight forward. You have always think (too?) hard how to accomplish something (it’s more like puzzle solving than going with the flow).

At least to me it’s much more manageable to use multiple sequencers in a kind of master/slave setup, where each machine is mainly controlled by its own sequencer (slave) and the master sequencer triggers only stuff like pattern changes, transpositions or slowly evolving CC changes.

True. Yes, I should have said 4 bars. That’s what I typically like to make.

Then I’d make a new pattern on the Digitakt for a second part and record that as audio into my DAW.

I arrange there so I don’t need song modes or anything. My main goal is using the pyramids strengths and the Digitakts strengths together. I have read a few guys who do this and love it, but I have been searching for details on YouTube about stuff like this too. Since the gear is specific, it’s not easy to find yet.

For now, I do not sequence the DT with Ableton. I have never seen the point. But the squarp would send a much more solid clock to the DT and also has midi features that are really, really good for drum sequencing.

I had Ableton Push, and it was cool, but I don’t really like sequencing drums that much in ableton. I prefer the Digitakt for that and would simply want to try and combine the features of the squarp with the DT. If that requires working with the DT’s limitations (4 bars instead of 8), thats not a problem since these sequencers together could make a 4 bar pattern evolve enough to wear it would give a lot of variety. Plus once you record all the into the DAW, you can arrange the audio even further from there.
