I promise I tried hard finding the answer in forums …
When sampling using ‘line in’ to the Digitakt, I’m not quite sure about the best volume the meter should indicate (let’s say in mono, 1 jack only).
Noting that I record signal of Eurorack devices which is approx. 2x louder. than what the DT is supposed to handle, so I use a mixer to attenuate it.
The goal is to find the right volume, too low the recorded signal would loose resolution and reveal more noise after normalization, too loud would distort, right…
But the meter does not seem to provide the right indication on the upper limit before distortion. If the signal peaks are close to the meter max (without fulfilling the bar completely) it distorts already. It seems that those peaks need to fill 4/5 of the bar, and even there if I push the volume up the bar gets filled in much slower. Maybe this is due to some exp / log properties of the sound volume I don’t understand well.
So in brief … what max level do you allow your signal peaks to go in the meter bar to have a clean sound with maxed resolution?
