I notices that I prefer the sound of the outputs over the sounds coming from overbridge and wondered if I could take that sound ever further with my modular rig.
My goal is to spice up the DT some more as I feel modular always sounds so powerfull, any ideas suggestions, examples?
I’m planning on going the other way, Eurorack into DT for sampling and mixing with percussion and atmospheric samples. But I don’t have many FX in my racks, they’re mostly analog.
You need to boost the digitakt level to modular level and possibly introduce some noise.
You’re going to lose multitrack then you always have to route the full mixes, unless you Just want to add saturation/distortion to the whole mix or go experimental with delays and such I don’t see advantages.
Why not use vcv rack w overbridge? This way you can add long chain of effects only to selected tracks and also control vcv with digitakt midi tracks.
I’m working towards a liveset and for simplicity sake I’d like to rule out a laptop with overbridge.
I use digitakt for atmos and percussion and use 2 voices of the modular. The modular is going into 1 and 2 in the digitakt and gets some light reverb and delay. Instead of getting an end of chain (analog heat/OTO boum) im wondering what the result would be if I bring the stereo mix back into the modular for some color and send that mix to the PA system.
I know Ricky tines does something similar so I wondered what other people are doing in this domain.
The extra context helps. I would have suggested sticking with overbridge and DSP mangling plus saturation plugins to try and match whatever it is you like about the DT line outputs.
I’ve had results I really like by bringing DT into modular case at line level, using a VCA to push the signal and apply an envelope to percussion, then pass that into something like NE versio (12-tap delay) to create some interesting rhythms. You can get much crazier than this of course
Highly recommend the versio modules (flexible firmware) for experimentation and mangling. I believe there is an end of chain mastering firmware and a “character” sort of multi and comp.
Anyway, at the end of the day won’t the output character of the DT that you like be changed going through modular?
I don’t perform live so what I have to say may not be of much use.
In rack I have a Versio (usually flashed to Elektus) and a Sarajewo (because nothing digital can really capture the sound of an analog BBD delay). Out of rack I have a Source Audio Collider (modest delay/reverb, substitute in your mind with something fancier) and an Analog Heat mk2 (substitute in your mind with AH+FX). I also have an iPad with some amazing effects that I am planning on using end-of-chain at times. I don’t think I’ve heard anything in rack that comes close to what one can do out of rack, unless you count very specific functionality like Morphagene, Mimeophon, or Erbe-Verb, each of which has a unique character. I know Ricky likes the Polydactyl but personally I was underwhelmed by it (and by his video on it, but maybe that is my ears / headphones). I think a Versio is a good investment in general so you could buy one and try it out.
Bottom line is that personally I think that for FX and end-of-chain, out of rack seems better.
Two points in favour of an iPad: first, apps are ridiculously cheap in comparison to desktop plugins or hardware, and second, the touch interface makes for some unique opportunities. I really don’t want to use my laptop for music (and I don’t understand why every DAW has an interface that looks like 1990), but for some reason I am not bothered by the iPad so far. I don’t know if any of this helps with a live set. I see videos of people using them but personally I would not trust either a computer or an iPad to behave under such circumstances. I’ve had too many nightmares suggesting the opposite.
