Digitakt II Transfer Reorganisation

I’m a brand new user to both the Digitakt II and music production in general. Been on the DTII for about three months now and as I’ve been learning different techniques my workflow and how I create / file / store samples is evolving.

Basically all I’m trying to do is reorganise samples already on the DTII’s onboard memory as I’ve changed the way I folder things. Using the Transfer software I can make new folders on the DTII internal architecture but I can’t seem to move anything already on the machine into the new folders.

Apart from the fact I don’t want to retransfer my entire collection over again I’ll also disconnect samples in projects that been reorganised.

I’d also like to move and reorganise sounds that I’ve resampled / recorded already onboard the Digitakt (one of my favourite features I’ve found so far) but currently can’t seem to get them out of the “recorded” folder.

Admittedly I’m brand new to this and never used any music hardware before, but am I missing something very obvious here? Seems like quite a big, basic flaw in the way the DTII works if you can’t move where a sample is stored on the device after you’ve transferred it in.

Hi.

I think that it would be smart to investigate mzero’s elk herd for sample management and see if it’s a better approach for you. The ability to reorganize the +drive is a bit more flexible than transfer. Check out the dedicated topic (and davemech’s walk through video) for more info.

I believe that there are several discussions re: general sample management practices, I’ll find one that I can link you to if you’re interested in how others approach the topic. Ultimately, if your goal is performing with this hardware, there are many benefits to organizing all of your content under the umbrella of a single project, but everyone has to do what makes the most sense for them.

You can check out some of the topics PofM mentions in his post here if interested:

Also, using sample chains is an effective way to make use of space and a different way to approach kits (meaning not the standard elektron “kits”) via utilizing the grid machine, and digichain is a really nice free utility for that purpose created by Brian3kb who is a member here.

Just as general naggyness I would encourage you to frequently back up your projects using transfer, as it just may save your ass one of these days.

Hold on and I’ll add a couple of links to this post (edit: amended)

Anyways hopefully some of that is useful to you.

Good luck.

You should be able to do this with transfer and both sides open on the DT2. Ususally the left side is blue for computer, and the right is orange for DT. But you can make the left side DT too (there’s a dropdown at the top of that files/folders area) and then you can drag and drop files from one side to the other to do what you want.

Ahaaaaa yes mate this is exactly what I was after! Slightly counterintuitive way of setting up that transfer system in my opinion but exactly what I need nonetheless, thank you.

Appreciate you taking the time to lay all this out for me, but unfortunately at this early stage it’s largely over my head.

Turns out all I needed to do was set up the transfer window so that I had both panels looking at the DGII rather than one looking at my laptop. That then allows you to transfer samples internally within the DGII rather than having to delete and re-import in new locations.

Will definitely take a look into the above when I’m a little more well versed though, thank you!

Glad you got it worked out.
