Digitakt II Tips & Tricks

Tired of clicks? Set Attack to something else than 0, same with Decay/Release and then make the notes the exact length of the trigs, minus a little bit something.

Being angry that Grid mode doesn’t allow for manual slicing? Use one-shot mode and do … manual slicing!

I am used to something similar with OT…

all old tricks, but maybe worth mentioning

Slice grid vs. one-shot samples

I have figured yesterday that using sample chains was very ineffective on DTII.
As you have a loooot of sample slots, it’s better to just populate them with the sample you need.
You can have all the benefits of sample chains (there is a LFO for sample slots) and more, as you can shorten a sample.
Resampling and using the new sample is also easier… (would love a render shortcut)
Plus you save space, as in chains you necessarily have some silent unless all your sample are the same length.
I’ll try @djadonis206’s trick to populate each bank with the kind of sample I put on the corresponding track, seems a good idea.

(Personally I use sample chains a ton, but those are always variations of “the same sound”, with the goal to sound organic and not like a sampler. The most simple example are my Rytm kicks, I sampled just four - actually the same - kicks each, and then use linear locks. Makes all the difference for me  )

I know, I use sample chains a lot. Especially on OT.
But on DTII it’s long to load, and offer you little benefits compared to using one-shot samples I believe.

I have to iron this, but I don believe from now on I’ll be using one-shots only.

I stack similar samples in a row (ex: hats on samples #25 to #32) and just use sample slot swap with a depth of 1.x to maybe 3 depending on how close the default track sample is to the ends. Never tried sample chaining in the traditional sense. I gather that it accomplishes the same thing?

i made a chain of patterns
Contrall all with loop playback, tune, sample slot, trig length, note, prob and filters…
A simple set of cheesy ‘build up patterns’
and 2 grooves with their fills, (by creating 56 length patterns + some 8 length fill patterns to chain it with)
I love the workflow of this digitale 2. I use it on its own, all equipment is standing still for a month now.

Love some of those fills!

this is more an ableton trick, but it makes working with the DT 2 and OG DT easier for me.

if you want to sync your ableton scenes in session mode with the pattern start on a connected DT, it can be frustrating because the program changes sent from ableton don’t cause an immediate change of pattern in the DT, causing the ableton scenes to start a pattern length earlier than on the DT.

The solution that works for me is to have one midi track in ableton contain clips with program changes for DT patterns and then turn off global quantization on those clips. Also set the ableton global quantization to the same length as the master length on the DT, or make use of the change length parameter on the DT instead.

When you then launch a new scene in ableton, the program changes get sent to the DT immediately, lining up the start of the next scene between ableton and the DT perfectly.

hope that helps someone else too

Edit: This works of course on any other Elektron machine as well, like Syntakt or Digitone.

Hey guys, posted up a new tutorial expanding on my last one. Some folks wanted to see how I built my songs and transitions out in the song mode sequencer. Let me know what you think!

awesome work, the video is super helpful!

elektron should be kind of embarrassed that the wonky screen issue is so widespread that it shows up on tutorial videos now though lol

Thanks! I’ll say that the video makes the screen look a lot worse than it really is.

I’ll also say that I was recording with someone recently and their syntakt had the same issue lol

Adding a link to this in this thread as it’s a nice way to get delay based flanger effects.

The increased RAM helps with stuff like this too. The DT II is my favourite Elektron box, I sold two OGs because it felt like a mono one-shot machine (that was really good at mangling) but the new one doesn’t have a lot of limitations, and the shortcomings it does have will be addressed with updates, hopefully.

Sorry for the off topic comment.

Hopefully the Mono sampling does not take a year or two - will help keep the forum tidy haha

Anyone know if DT2 can replace OT in terms of doing live sets with audio stems? Wondering if there’s an easy way to get smooth transitions between banks, other than using delays and reverbs.

It really depends on what you want to do exactly and how much time you want to spend preparing (and transferring) your stems. 16 stereo tracks provide some new possibilities to fade tracks in and out on the mixer page and you can stay within a single “transition” pattern. However, as a stem player, I think the OT is better suited for the job with its fader and the record buffer transition trick. It’s also easier and faster to transfer your stems to the CF card in comparison to what’s currently possible on the DT2.

Edit: Timestrech on the DT2 is an acquired taste as well. Mixing songs with (drastically) different BPMs could sound pretty wonky, I guess.

Thanks for a great reply, appreciate it. Guess I should buy an OT again
