Digitakt and Studio One set-up? External instrument

Hello

Just got my Digitakt and I am really looking forward to learn it, seem so fun:)
So far tried it with my Bass Station 2 and Nord Drum 2. Work great with midi to both trigger midi and send CC and Program Changes.

I have now installed the Overbridge and followed Daves M. instruction how to set it up in Studio One 3/4.
It seem to work great, but I have only inserted it as a vst instrument in studio one. I get 8 separate audio tracks.

Now my question: As a newbie of hardware I might get this wrong…
Do I still have to set up an external instrument in Studio One? Is there a reason for this if it work as a vst plugin inside Studio One? Both my Analog Four MK2 and Digitakt seem to work without setting them up as external instruments /and/or controller.

I don’t see why you’d need to set up any external instruments unless you want to control the Digitakt from the DAW via MIDI for example.
