I’ve heard some bad stuff about DOREMIDI, hung/stuck notes, missing data etc. It’s possible its been fixed or maybe not this model, but personally I wouldn’t bother.
You can probably find something like an Iconnectivity MIDI4+, for only a little bit more cash second hand. More reliable, room for expansion etc.
The Novation app is called Components. You can download an offline version or use the online one. It’s very simple.
I can’t speak to the quality of the Doremidi box, but that setup should work if it does what it’s advertised to.
USB MIDI controllers, like the Launch Control XL (LCXL), need to be connected to a USB Host - typically a computer.
Most instruments - including the Digitakt - do not have host ports on them.
So you cannot connect them directly - you need a USB MIDI host box if you don’t want to use a computer.
Rather than a hardware box like that, or a computer, I use my iPad/iPhone running AUM as a USB MIDI host/router.
That way I can use the LCXL to control hardware like the Digitakt (over USB) or music apps.
.
What makes it a little annoying is that the Digitakt has fixed MIDI CC assignments, rather than a “MIDI learn” function.
And the LCXL has to be connected to a computer (or a $15 iOS app purchase) to assign the right MIDI CCs to its controls.
So you have to decide which controls you want on it, look up the CC numbers in the manual, and program it onto a device profile with your computer.
Once that profile is set up though, it’s easy to recall and use without the computer (it has 8 user preset slots).
.
Some of the higher-end controllers can avoid that step.
I believe Faderfox controllers let you program them on-device for example, as they have a display to show you which MIDI CC is being assigned to each control.
Yeah I had a Faderfox 12.
Thing was a nightmare to figure out how to program, but I got it to work with Digitakt and digitone without a midi converter box. I unfortunately sold it an have now a launch control XL that I don’t use, but I’m unclear about the sequence of what needs to be done to get it to work as the FF, like you said, you could program CC’s right on the unit. Someone needs to figure out how to make this stuff easier. Or even better, if Elektron liked money, they would offer an external fader control unit for it’s boxes. They’d sell like hotcakes, but apparently, they have enough money.
Kenton makes a solid little USB Midi box. I have one. I planned on using my LaunchControl with my Digitakt. But, I mainly use the DT on my lap in the living room, so an external control box is not really convenient most of the time. Never even set it up. Did I mention I am also really lazy? I didn’t look forward to setting up all the Midi CC’s, etc. I should probably sell the Kenton box and LaunchControl. But, again, I am lazy, haha.
For what it’s worth, the process of programming the LCXL is not too complicated; it’s just tedious.
You plug it into your computer, go to https://components.novationmusic.com/ in Chrome (or another supported browser) and allow it to access MIDI devices when prompted.
Then it’s a case of having the Digitakt manual open at the MIDI appendix, in a window next to the components website.
Look up the CC value you need, select the control in Components, and enter the CC/MIDI channel.
It’s easiest to pick one CC and assign it to eight controls/MIDI channels before moving onto the next.
Then you save the template and upload it to the device.
Templates are loaded by holding the USER button on the top-right of the device, and pressing one of the eight keys that light up.
Thanks you for the idea! I might try that. Right now I have my Digitakt, and sometime my Digitone or Syntakt, placed on a binder/notebook, with Elektron printed manuals inside. Makes a nice platform and is obviously convenient for looking up things in the manuals from time to time.
@Scyphozoa I understand somewhat how to set this up. But if I’m sending clock from my hapax > Erica synths mid thru box > 1 thru to digitakt 2 midi in and 1 thru to digitone midi thru, how do I route the cabling? I’d like to control 6 tracks on Digitakt and 2 on the digitone with the LCXL. Just not sure how to route all the midi 5 pin.
I think connecting the LCXL to MIDI In on Hapax should work; but I’m not familiar with how to go about setting that up.
Otherwise, I think you’d need to connect it to a MIDI Merge box between Hapax and the MIDI Thru box. But I’ve never used one of those so I’m not sure if it works that way.
Do you have the completed template handy? Just received my launch control and about to start going through this process and have been unable to find any published template.
Hi ! I just get a Novation Launcontrol XL to externally control my DT II and other stuff (SP-404mkII and 1010music Lemondrop) using User presets with an iConnectivity MIO XM to make the midi bridge.
Setting the CCs and midi channels was pretty easy with Component but there is still one thing that I can’t figure out and drives me crazy :
For example User preset 1 controls all the mixing functionalities as “Track level”, “Pan” and “FX sends”, then, User preset 2 controls sampling and filter functionalities as “Tune”, “Filter Frequency”…
Everything works fine but the thing is as soon as I change the User preset and touch a knob or fader the parameter immediately goes to previous value set in the previous User Preset for a different function.
My question is : is there a way to set a “pickup” takeover option to avoid that issue ?
I can’t find anything about that on the web and it seems crazy to me that Novation didn’t think about that but as it is essentially built to control Ableton and other Daws maybe there is nothing to do with it in standalone ?
Thank you advance for your replies
For info, I use Launch Control XL with a CME H4MIDI WC. It does MIDI Host but also many other things. It’s a very interesting tool! https://www.thomann.fr/cme_h4midi_wc.htm
With Launch Control, I looked for a simple configuration, with a single preset, for “live” type use. For now, the top two rows of knobs are set to the “Mod Wheel” and “Breath Controller” CCs for tracks 9-16 (which allows you to control 4 parameters per track), the third row and the faders control the Mixer Volume for all tracks and the buttons the Pattern Mute.
I think it’s an interesting setup!
I think the problem is inevitable. Launch Control parameters cannot be updated, the DT does not send the parameters to MIDI Out when changing presets or patterns!
What I do is to use the “Mod Wheel” and “Breath Controller” CCs (which allow you to control 4 parameters per track, I choose the parameters with which I want to play live) with an initial value that is always identical. This lets me easily initialize the pots when I change patterns.
