Can someone recommend a device that will let me dial in frequencies with .01 cent precision then play that reference tone out loud so that I can microtune by ear? An audio range frequency counter with 1/4" audio jacks would work too, but all I find on Amazon is oscilloscopes, etc., with BNC jacks for input. Is engineering gear really the only option, or is there a musical one?
Have you checked out online tone generators for generating test tones? I think some of them can be fine tuned. They’re usually used for calibration. You would need to manually convert whatever fraction of a cent you’re looking for into frequency though, I assume with a calculator and a reference chart it wouldn’t be too difficult.
There’s a lot of old school hardware-based test tone generators that do the same thing which you could source and purchase but like, free is ok too I assume. Just gotta sift through the online ones until you find one that has enough precision for your liking. If that’s not what you want, I would still look into audio test tone generators as the class of device you’re searching for but you’ll still need to think in terms of specific frequencies. Hopefully that helps.
So you’re saying if I google “online tone generators for generating test tones,” then I will find something like this? Cool, thanks.
I’m kind of anal about finding the right thing so I’d probably look for something like this which gives a robust warning about damaging your hearing and tells you how to adjust in increments of .01hz
but there’s no right way to quote shakespeare as long as you’re speaking in iambic pentameter so pick what seems best and go with that.
Audacity should do the job too.
The gift that keeps on giving!
