I’ll be visiting Detroit in July. I’ve been there before but not for many years. I love so much of the music that’s come out of there—Theo Parrish, Moodymann, and Andres are in particular three of my favorite electronic music artists.
Is anyone here from Detroit? I would love to visit spots that have some connection to its electronic music history—bars, clubs, record stores (even though I don’t collect records), whatever.
It’s obviously not directly related to electronic music but the Motown museum was fucking magical to me. To be in the space where so many incredible records were made gave me goosebumps.
For clubs, check out Marble Bar or Spotlite, keep an eye on Paxahau for events.
Seconding spot lite and marble bar. Check out shigeto’s and waajeed’s show on the wdet radio app (the new music show, the boulevard) as they play a lot of Detroit music and talk about events etc
I like Paramita Sound for a quick drink. They have well curated vinyl for sale and the early evening vibe is nice and chill, usually with a live dj. Next door at Siren hotel, you have candy bar, which is great for fancy cocktails. Around the corner you can find some good tapas at Olin. I used to live in Spain, so I can say with confidence they are really bringing it at this establishment. For more vinyl, I would recommend Peoples Records on Gratiot Ave. I have been able to snag a few releases from Mahogani music there. Nearby Eastern market is fun to explore on foot, especially if you like street art. Over in Corktown, I would recommend Takoi for a unique modern Thai food. I’m not a Detroit expert, but I’ve been a few times and I really like the vibe there.
I try to get to Detroit anytime Todd Osborne/Soundmurderer is playing at Marble Bar. Have seen him with Luke Vibert a couple times, including last weekend. Definitely worth checking out, if you like DnB/Acid. Have seen Terrence Dixon there as well.
i’ve always wanted to go to detroit and hang around a while and bike all over the place. it looks like an interesting place to explore. haven’t had the opportunity… yet. some day!
