OPN w/ production credits on the majority of tracks on Dawn FM. The album is definitely more Weekend than OPN as one might expect, and it’s got less OPN weirdness overall than I personally had hoped for. Still, it will probably be the only time we get Lil Wayne and Daniel Lopitan on the same track so that feels like a win somehow.
Excellent album it’s been on repeat
I listened to the single and couldn’t deal with the awful fake vibrato on his vocals.
I don’t quite understand how he ( the weekend) gets so much praise when he needs so many other people … producers, exec producer , co writers etc etc to make ‘his’ music. ( I. Know it’s an old argument since Motown etc ) plus the usual celeb bull of fashion advisors , choreographers, directors , publicists , makeup etc.
I guess everyone gets paid and that can lead to something more fulfilling and creative , and if each individual is happy then who am I to bitch about it on a forum. … just another opinion from someone who’s not made million selling albums.
In short - not for me.
Idk, Bowie for instance is nearly universally lauded and considered highly influential, but was greatly reliant on others for his iconic sounds, costumes, shows, etc etc. Seems some people’s good/greatness is, in part, who they choose to work with.
I’ve never bought any Bowie or intentionally listened to any.
But he did dress up and look weird which helped to stand out .
I do find it interesting how different a singer / band can sound when they change producer. Depeche mode have certainly benefitted from it too. Kanye was respected on his own early work but now he just changes sound / vocoder based on who he pays.
I didn’t say my opinion would be popular and it shouldn’t impact anyone else’s opinion , if you love the weekend I hope you love the new album.
I hate it… Weeknd hasn’t done anything good since kissland. He is just a wannabe prince now.
I didn’t mean to imply your own perspective isn’t valid. You simply said you didn’t get how other people praise this way of working and I gave an example to show it’s fairly commonly recognised at even the highest levels of critical praise. I guess I’m more a ‘the end product is what matters’ type.
But then if the end product isn’t to your liking either…
Have had a listen, and I’m not really a fan of funk, disco, modern pop, or modern pop incorporating elements of funk and disco. So it’s not really for me. Well produced though, at times.
Also, it’s weird to have an antivaxxer (Jim Carrey) try to tell me cosmic truths.
im really hoping opn ditches this pop sound for his next album.
Is he?? I had not heard this. I googled it but couldn’t find anything. Could you link it?
Apologies. I’m referring to Jim Carrey here - he’s been a fairly open ‘old school’ antivaxxer (eg claiming vaccines cause autism), though I’m not up to date on his stance re covid vaccines.
I’ve not heard any suggestion The Weeknd shares these views. I’ve updated the post to make that clearer.
I also hope this sound isn’t the shape of solo 0PN to come, but there’s an irony in us saying this when so much of his sound (eg Eccojams) is fully informed by pop.
…the sound of global mainstream pop…and where it’s at right now…
close to end of first quarter of the 21st century…
just another snippet in pop history…
some snippets in pop history last longer, got more weight…in pop history…
while others just happen to vanish for the next one to come…happy digest…
but…damn…“the hills”…also digested but never forgotten…as simple and part stolen and zombiesonic it is…that weekend song catched me first seconde i heard it…and still got me…did all the mainstream pop trick on me…
Right. And his encyclopedic knowledge of 80s synth with a twist is a perfect fit for what the Weeknd is doing.
But I really wish people would stop exhuming the 80s. That bone is bare.
I agree, can’t stand that 80s sound anymore
had a flick through it, sounded … boring… a bit over polished, I was a big fan of weeknd on his 1st three mixtapes
Tough crowd, to each his own. This is my favorite Weeknd album. Sacrifice and Less Than Zero are gold. Love the production and the songs overall.
Insightful interview with Bruce Johnston from The Beach Boys about how he and Mike Love’s son Christian Love ended up with a songwriting credit for “Here We Go…Again” on the album:
Reading that interview made me feel like there’s a glitch in the simulation.
First youre in a movie with adam Sandler, next thing you know youve got jim Carrey on your tracks
