Anthony Surgeon gave an interview where he said most of his vinyl is two tracked into a DAW right off the Octatrack, so, imma go ahead and say you’re wrong.
There definitely ARE records that you cannot re create without a DAW, and most techno is compressed all to shit with micro tuning every kick drum and high hat…
Pacou is also a purveyor of fine techno bangers and as far as I know his setups are pretty punk.

I know it was him because he also left a 1 hour spoken word manifesto, mostly about how pathetic and lifeless my hats are, but also touching on how I was weak, my bloodline was weak, and none of us would survive the coming winter.
I did not notice at the time because I was AT MY COMPUTER making incredibly controversial statements such as MOST ELECTRONIC MUSIC YOU HEAR IS MADE WITH THE HELP OF A COMPUTER.
This is obviously the stupidest position to take, I am dumb, my bloodline is weak, and my hats? Don’t even go there.
In the mean time I will take on board the production advice which I read as “be Surgeon.”
Obviously, if my productions fail to reach the level of his, it’s not because he has been doing it for 25 years, was and is an integral part of one of the major world centres of electronic music with the connections and opportunities that affords one. It’s because I am dumb and bad and probably should just buy some more gear.
Perhaps I was cursed from the outset by the phenomenological boundaries of my own consciousness, unable to transcend them to literally become Surgeon. Maybe I should buy some more shrooms instead?
What will happen to Surgeon though? Seems like he has the whole “be Surgeon” thing down pretty well. What if, deep down, maybe I don’t even want to be Surgeon? Whats a lad to do then?
In hindsight I could’ve worded my original comments better. Surgeon totally makes techno without a DAW. Nobody can tell you what techno is or how it should be made. Its almost like I said in every post you should seek out the artists you respect and aspire to and listen to them over a bunch of internet people like me.
Since I feel like I am not doing well at communicating, the above is all intended to be humorous and rhetorical. Surgeon did not actually take a crap in my letterbox (although I have not checked the mail today). I do enjoy reading other peoples comments and views.
I’ve heard rumours about Anthony Surgeon going round and crapping in unconventional places. Apparently it’s part of being ‘real techno’ and using toilets for defecation is selling out. Who knew all those times I went camping and crapped in the woods I was actually sending out a message against the man. That and getting bitten on the arse by mosquitoes.

Yep. DAW does not even have to lead to over-produced tracks, it’s all about the process.
DAW vs Hardware is like Analogue vs Digital. Endless opinions. And while people are posting their opinions on forums, there are folks that use it all in their own way to produce the music they love.

Maybe one conclusion is that the opposite isn’t completely the same: When using hardware, just don’t try/want to make it be as hyper-polished as the production aesthetic that modern DAW’s are capable of.
