Dave mech Masterclass

Has anyone purchased Dave Mech’s Digitone courses? Are they worth it?

Personally a big fan of both his music and his videos and tutorials. So for me - I don’t have DN2 tho, but DN OG, DT OG & 2 courses have been great tools for learning. It’s difficult to speak for an entire community, but I’ve not seen anyone say anything negative about them here, only heard positive feedback.

But I’m a fan of his as well, so of course factor that in

I have already followed the course on the DT2 which is a must-have. It’s quite dense and I think it might be necessary to practice with a few YouTube tutorials first to learn the basics if you are completely new to the Elektron sequencer.

After that, it is really worth it. It is well-structured, the explanations are clear, and there are a lot of composition tips that go beyond simply learning the technical aspects of the device.

I have just started the course on the DN. I’m looking forward to starting the module on FM synthesis, which looks very complete.

I specify that I am not at all in the same musical universe that he and it did not bother me for all that.

I’ve purchased the DN2 course - absolutely worth the price! There is no other resource like this that has everything in one place, so neatly structured and well explained. It covers all aspects - from basic workflow walkthrough, through sound design, arranging, mixing and even live performance. I guess you can gather some of this knowledge for free, but it will cost You time, navigating through tons of Youtube vids from different creators.

@DaveMech has been a high-signal contributor here since before I joined. If I bought a DT2 or a DN2, the second thing I would buy is his course. I’ve only heard good things about them.

Go for it. Dave Mech properly knows his shit. He’s also a good dude and his music gets way less attention than it deserves. Quality producer.

I checked out this shop recently. I’d love to use it to get to know the DTII and DNII better, but the price of the courses are holding me back. Not saying it wouldn’t be worth the price, it just costs more than I had anticipated. But looking at the Youtube videos he made, I found it pretty easy to follow his flow, so I guess the courses should be good material. Guess I’ll save a bit longer

@DaveMech is running a promo atm (got Black Friday emails) — maybe check again.

I picked up the course on sale last week. So far - i love it. Snappy, thorough, well structured and like 15 hours of content. Im like watching and rewatching each video as theres so much to take in.

I dont get why anyone would spend just shy of a grand on hardware and then rely on a youtube rabbit hole to forage information. I mean one popular course on youtube is some guy reciting what hes learnt in the past 48 hours of using DT. Like whats the point in following that? Its like having driving lessons off someone who has just taken off their learner plates. Im sure theres nuggets of information in there somewhere but nah, not for me.

Great course Dave Mech, worth the investment

Agree.

It’s certainly possible to find all sorts of information scattered across YouTube videos. But without a good structure and learning methodology, it’s all just a waste of time.

I try and avoid YT these days.

Since TE came along with the OP-1 I find YT has exploded with synth videos and people just yapping on about gear. Before TE it was a ‘handful’ of people with old synths doing something creative - DIY videos from talented people like Martin Bell (vinyl junkie06)…Now its a whole industry of pluggers, sales people, influencers, bad music, well meaning teachers… I guarantee if i went on YT now i would waste the day scouting for buddies for my DT2

Maybe it’s because I haven’t bought an online course like that before, but I was expecting the price to be like 80 euros lower

I tried that route, but it seems a good solid course is indeed the best way to go. I’ll just save up a bit more then.

For anyone that has taken the DT2 and DN2 courses, how much do they overlap?

I mean, I know there will be some overlap, but are the Mixing, Arranging, and Performance chapters substantially the same, or are there enough differences to make them interesting in their own right?

Out of interest, where does this number come from? Udemy?

Dave Mech isn’t some udemy for the masses, he has his own platform and is very thorough

I looked into his shop at his own site. Course price is most probably justified, but I was just expecting a lower price

Yeah it was the lower price expectancy I was curious about, if that was based around previous experience with platforms like Udemy or similar

It seems kind of a niche business doing courses for these type of instruments and live performance, so potential customer base size + effort will have a huge impact on price

I had expected it to cost less too, but I decided it was worth it and am making my slow way through it now. I guess if you compare it to the price of all the lessons you’d need to learn the guitar inside and out, though, the price isn’t bad at all :woman_shrugging:

I note that only those who haven’t taken the course find it too expensive. I haven’t seen a single one of those who did complain about their investment.

It’s not like the course isn’t worth it, just that it is more than I expected, and I need to justify for myself setting aside some extra money. I don’t use the equipment professionally, just hobby. OTOH, I WOULD like to learn more about the Elektrons I have in a structured way, so yeah, a few extra standby shifts will take care of this.
