Cyma forma - RND

Got this email below from Cyma - seems interesting:

hi

today, we’re releasing RND synth, an instrument that embodies quite a unique take on how a synth can be played, and what it can be used for.

it all started exactly 2 years ago, when our friend Jérémy (Bambounou), messaged us saying “guys, i have a great idea. let’s make a one button synth. that’s it. only random”.

what a weird and fun idea.

after the initial ‘wtf’ reaction, we started discussing it, imagining how we would make it, how it would sound, what it would look like.

a few months later, we started meeting Jérémy regularly and we got to work.

the extremely limited control - one button! - contrasted with the potentially unlimited array of features inside the instrument.

synthesis engines, modulation, sequencing, effects, musical scales, filters, ins and outs, it was all a blank canvas that gave us complete freedom.

after 2 years of trial and error, hesitations, iterations, decisions… and a lot of fun, it’s finally coming out.

what is it?

RND synth is a digital synth.
we developed it in collaboration with Bambounou, and with the huge help of Nick Donaldson from Infrasonic Audio.

it’s got 8 synthesis engines, so it sounds extremely diverse.

the engines are: subtractive, fm, acid, noise, speech, karplus-strong, supersaw, and additive, and more to come.

every time you press the button, all of the many parameters across all features are set to carefully weighted random values, giving birth to what we call a musical idea, that only exists until the next press of the button.

each musical idea is assigned a random tempo, a random scale, and is made of up to 4 distinct tracks.

each track draws from any of the 8 engines, whose parameters are fully randomized.

each track will also run its own randomized euclidian sequence.

there are also many modulation sources and destinations, 5 filter types, time signatures, and a reverb. all random.

what is it for?

RND synth is an inspiration machine. there are 4,29 billion random seeds, meaning 4,29 billion different musical ideas.

if you want to make music but don’t know where to start, or if you’re stuck in the middle of a track of yours, or if you just want to space out, just press the button.
you’ll definitely find something interesting.

one of the cool things about RND synth is that on top of the stereo output over mini jack, it also features 4-track audio over usb-c.

that means that for each musical idea, you can mix and record each of the 4 tracks individually.

if you want to mute or solo each track, you can.

it’s also got 4 channel midi in and out, and analog sync in and out.

midi can be used 9 different ways : global transpose + individual track sequence take over — with the other tracks playing (4 modes) or solo (4 modes).

so yes, it’s only got one button, but we made sure it can fit into any music set up.

we are very proud of how RND synth turned out, particularly of its usability.

what was more of a toy at first, became a powerful and very useful instrument.

it’s also meant to grow wider with future firmware updates.

it’s come a long way since Jérémy’s initial message. we hope you like it.

thanks

Wowza, my interest is piqued! Thanks for posting out the email. Excited to learn more specifics and sounds later today!

I think I have been looking for something like this for a while.

And be the same price.

What’s quicker to set up ?

Makes more sense ?

I hate it when a company makes a new product, and a bunch of E’nauts pile on to tell everybody what’s wrong. ( Look at what they’ve done to the Svensson thread ! )

This looks like a great product !

To be fair, that is the point.

Looks cool as hell either way, I’d love to see some more about it.

Well, my initial comments were a bit too one-sided. There’s nothing wrong with the hardware, I did preorder it. Everything Cyma Forma makes is incredibly creative. I just think a software version would be a good idea at some point either as an addition for the hardware owners or at a lower cost, and maybe with more controls. I’d go with the hardware when using it with other gear, and the software if it goes straight into the DAW, synced and recorded right away with no cables. The concept has a lot of potential to grow, and is what ‘AI music’ should have been imo, not the BS we’re seeing that just takes other people’s music

Too menu dive-y. I am out!!!

This seems a job for baby audio:

However, I really doubt this would sell like crazy in VST form.

Also, an RND video synth in the same format would be wild, I think they mentioned somewhere they’ve got some kind of video synth in the works

This is a wonderful successor to the machine I currently own. All that one plays is farts

I like this a lot. I will think about getting it when it’s in stock at US retailers, for sure. It seems like something very creative and joyful, and I like responding and reacting to things rather than just writing them all. I was a bit thrown by the fact that it’s got four tracks all at once, and would be a lot more compelled if it had 4x hardware outs in addition to the 4x usb outs. But it’s cool! I see how having no separate hardware outs kind of pushes it a bit more toward a lack of control which is clearly strong in the concept.

Me: " That’s a weird product, I don’t think I’ll be getting it…"
Tonverk and S4: “Wait!!!”

More sound demos. Sounds very musical / well curated in terms of randomness

Same here, I love good song starting tools. A lot of my favorite stuff comes from flipping through presets/samples randomly until I hear that one little thing that sparks an entire idea. I’m sure that’s probably pretty normal, but makes this a very intriguing device.

I had an immediate impression where I wished that it at least had the ability to lock to a chosen key, tempo, scale. Say for if I already had some material and needed an inspirational kick in the ass, but at the same time I get why it doesn’t and almost think that would make it too easily relied on.

I was really happy to read that it has MIDI in and is multi-timbral, so I think you should be able lock to scale on your controller/sequencer!

And I agree with @samuelddy – it really does sound very musical in terms of terms of its weighted randomness!

Wow I missed that. Very cool and even more useful.

Wow I love this. Immediately ordered to support people making weird stuff.
