Cutting off long sample with trig on last step for pattern change / mute

I’ve got a 12 bar melody recorded as a single sample, playing its first 8 bars in a loop on the digitakt. I have it’s env release on infinite so it plays the 8 bars from 1 trig.

when changing pattern or muting the channel this would lead it to play out the remaining 4 bars of the 12 bar sample over the start of the next pattern so Im placing a conditional trig (2:2) on the last step (env release zero, trig length less than 16th) to cut off the sample on its 2nd time round (the end of 8 bars) but its not cutting the sample off for some reason. I mute the channel but it keeps on playing the remainder of the full sample over the next pattern with infinite release like before.
Am I missing something?

ah silly boy, I was muting the track before the last step hence it didn’t trig.
