I don’t like the common keyboard stands. Instead, I’d like to put nice legs in my synths. I like the vintage look, mid century modern, or for example legs like a Rhodes or Hohner clavinet (removable for portability, and perhaps thinner and lighter than the legs of a Rhodes, depending on the size and weight of the synth). Has anyone managed to do anything like that? Any pointers?
This for your custom synth ?
Look at how Arturia did their wood legs that they use with both the PolyBrute and the KeyLab. They have wooden legs and use a standard two way threaded “bolt” to attach to a metal plate that attaches to the synth. They also have two rods that reinforce the rear legs.
There are pictures at adorama.com, the link is giving me trouble.
ADDED : I already posted better picture of all the components to these legs here:
Straight dowel would be OK if you don’t lathe tapered legs. Square stock would work too. Instead of the metal piece at the top you could substitute a wood piece, like two 1 x 3s that attach to your synth. There are various ways to attach the legs at an angle to this cross piece.
A lot depends how heavy the synth is and how you want it to look.
I did a stand that used threaded pipe, that screwed into pipe flanges, and the flanges were attached with wood screws to the two wood pieces that attach to the synth. You can buy rubber feet that goes on the pipe.
A couple ideas.
Also, if you search for “mid century modern table legs” things like this will pop up. Just an example - I haven’t purchased from them myself.
I’ve used those sorts of legs too. Got mine scrap. They came with the metal brackets that angle the legs out. That was for a real table but it’s the same principle.
NOTE : I almost never buy furniture, i find and fix.
Yes, I am thinking about doing it for that synth, and also for the Prologue 8 when I get it back.
I didn’t remember the Arturia legs, they look great. Thanks for all the info and ideas, I’ll see what can I make.
