As much as I hate to admit it, I think I’m just as happy with the distortion I can make in software as I was with my Fusion system.

if there’s an option in any distortion plugin you use to do oversampling - use it, it will remove some dirty digital aliasing artifacts and the distortion will be much more organic, not in every plugin of course but it does change the character quite a bit to be less harsh.
also checkout Guitar Amplifier and Cabinet Plugin [VST, AU, AAX] - Boogex - Voxengo as amp simulator, there’s lots of amp modes in there and it can be mono or stereo… nice (free) character plugin 
btw it supports additional cabinet impulses from here: SNB impulse response files
