So i posted this a while back in the software thread but thought I thought it could do with a repost as there has been a bunch of movement since I last posted.
So i built this app which was inspired by my Digitakt, thus posting it here. The need was to quickly be able to fill all 128 sample slots with audio without having to go slice up 128 random files manually… so CHOPGRID was born…
One click it takes 16 random audio files and cuts 16 random start points…
it then expanded quickly into having 18 different modules for Effects, synths and sequencers to generate audio to slice also.
The big updates since its last post is it runs a VST3 on mac or pc, or as a standalone Mac app… I have also added more comprehensive Midi control, so as a VST you can trigger the slices via midi, added a new VCA Sequencer module, drag & drop, slice shaping and short sample support.
In general, I’ve tended to avoid sharing future plans (so as not to promise anything, and also not to get flooded with feature requests), but oh well… let’s assume we’re all adults here
We had some administrative difficulties this spring/summer that set us back by a couple of months, so things have been moving a bit slower than usual here. v1.0.3 is just around the corner, most likely in early September now; it fixes a handful of bugs and adds quality-of-life improvements here and there: adding muted cursors, remembering plugin window sizes, easier scrolling through modulators, improved display with many channels, etc.
Then, this autumn will probably see the release of v1.1, which will add some genuinely new features. So far, we have implemented for v1.1: basic multitrack support (which we call lanes), enhanced MIDI support (14-bit, NRPN, toggle/velocity options), and the ability to automate/modulate each snapshot individually. We’re planning to add cut/copy/paste functionality, per-module presets, and advanced channel routing. I’m also working on some rather promising waveshaping, distortion, and dynamics-processing tools, which I’ll do my best to integrate somehow. Plus the usual set of smaller things that will come along as we go.
After that for v1.2 we’re planning to attack quantization, sync-to-tempo, and some fun new modules which I have in mind (and several of you too).
Hope this clarifies things a bit. Lucijan and I have our calendar quite full and doing our best to make Atelier the platform we’re dreaming of.
It’s not exactly on topic, but I discovered Slate + Ash company particularly in this thread (Cycles).
Their new VST (not a Reaktor Player instrument) is following similar ideas and has similar interface, and looks overall like a take on “What if Cycles were an effect?”. I think it also could be seen as some sort of alternative to MN/SoundHack eurorack delays.
