Another good and obvious question that should be asked is - why would anyone want to be?
I love synth, gear, and music production videos on YouTube. I like the no nonsense Loopop style videos, I love the synth nerds, the yoga mat philosophers, the cable choked eurorackers, the messy desked comedians, and everything in between.
If anyone is thinking of doing videos then just do them and don’t be like someone else. Do a video, do another, then another. Be yourself and try to offer something to me, the viewer. If I see you are I to what you are doing, I’ll react positively and probably want to watch more.
For me watching these things is just filling the rest periods while I stare at my gear figuring out what to do next. Sometimes it Loopop, sometimes it’s Ricky T, sometimes it’s Bob Eats, sometimes it’s someone using gear I don’t have, don’t want, will never get, but is cool to watch and learn about anyway.
Could anyone produce the type of content that he produces?
I think the answer there is that you could provided you were extremely knowledgable and experienced with a range of equipment and you put a huge amount of work into it, but we are talking full time job levels of effort here, not a couple of hours on a weekend.
the second question is, is there space for someone else to do what Loopop does?
The answer seems to be “not really” very often reviews by other YouTubers start with “I’m not going to give you a detailed breakdown of features because you should just watch Loopop”. This suggests that within his niche they perceive that there is no point trying to compete.
They only person I can think of who crosses over with him in a meaningful way is True Cuckoo and his videos are more like tutorials for if you’ve already bought the gear rather than Loopop who is more like I’m about to buy this and I just want to check that it does all the things I need it to.
I like that he doesn’t put on a personality for entertainment value, that works for some, but usually it is just really annoying. He knows his stuff and has the impeccable ability to communicate clearly and to the point. Top marks from me.
Not everyone is able to provide a structured deliverable the way he does, matched with a near perfect words articulation. So no, not anyone can be him.
I’ve seen his face, typical kind of Mediterranean-Semitic complexion and a rather stout physique His name is Ziv and I think he’s on Facebook. I believe he’s from Israel. Weird thing about him is that his accent is nor English, nor American, although it feels like it’s his mother tongue, honestly.
But yeah, from all synthtoobers he’s one of the most elusive. I wonder if he needs a “real” job anymore.
But yeah, put away all the corporate shilling and very shallow occasional “cons” section, and Loopop actually generates value. His reviews taste better eaten as tutorials.
I feel like there’s a serious lack of actual reviews with actual opinions from knowledgeable people in general! Not just on YouTube but print magazines as well.
99% of things you come across are precisely what Loopop is doing: Running through the features of a machine and the “review” conclusion always being “it depends on what you’re looking for”. If you read these “reviews” you’d think that every piece of music gear is awesome and useful, whereas from buying a lot of gear I’ve come to the conclusion that even really expensive gear is often seriously flawed and not congruent with any kind of smooth workflow.
Someone start doing opinionated, hard core, in-depth reviews please! I already have a job so I can’t, but put up a patreon and I think people will support it.
