I use Cubase for recording, editing and mixing of my own music. However, I have never tried one of the many control surface options out there. Hotkeys + mouse seems to work well for me, but I guess I might not know what I’m missing out on. Out of curiosity, do many of you DAW users work with dedicated control surfaces? What are your opinions?
If you want something cheap i would recommend the CMC series. I got 5 of these for like $100. Some of them are really usefull, and some i dont use that much. But the “eq” one is nice, and the “AI” knob is also usefull. The last one gives you a knob to twist for the parameter you hoover the mouse over.
And if you have several of them you have easy access to play, mute, record enable. And zoom in the timeline.
I just read up what that AI knob is. That sounds very nice, indeed. I don’t quite see how transport buttons, record, etc. is better than the numpad, but a knob like this I can easily see myself use all the time.
I feel i dont have to look up at the screen as often. But I use Cubase as a glorified multitrack recorder, so my workflow is different. The Eq one is also good. I don’t use it for eq though. But I have set up a template in Cubase for all audio channels, and use the knobs for compressor, saturation and effect sends. And have the same on every track so it is easy to use. The knobs light up and the intensity shows an estimate of the value the parameter is set to.
