Considering a laptop/hybrid setup need tips

Hey all.
I have the DT2 and DN2 and I currently just record the 2 boxes separately into my iPad. I love the setup, but I’d like to expand. I’m considering another synth that I can sequence with the Digitone.
I’ve shortlisted a few synths “take 5, perfourmer, A4”
However, I’m wondering if I could just save a lot of money by just getting a laptop instead of a synth and using the Elektron boxes with the laptop as a hybrid setup. I’ve never used overbridge which Is something I could then utilise.
Does anyone else use a hybrid setup like this and have any tips.
I’ve no idea what laptop to buy or daw for that matter. But the price of one of the above mentioned synths I’m sure I could get a good capable laptop.

Why not just use the iPad? It has a ton of great synths that you can control with the DN and DT.

You can try it out using pretty much any computer. Do you not have any computer at home at all right now?

There is a tradeoff involved. You pay for a PC and VST’s and end up paying the same amount but have many more synths in the box. It also comes with annoyances and issues like software going out of date.

I would not buy a laptop just for VST synths. Not worth the terrible hassle as mentioned earlier, software and OS troubleshooting…

You’d lose the hands on hardware feeling, not sure it’s worth it financially either. Then you need a hub, a controller (unless you like tweaking with a mouse or trackpad), MIDI headache, latency solving…

If you’d want to sequence everything from a laptop, enjoy VSTs, I’d consider getting a laptop a the brain of a setup but just as a synth, naaah.
