Connecting up with IPad mini lightning USB OTG

Hi,
I have an ipad mini (i think 1st or 2nd gen).
It uses the lightning port and I’m wondering if something like this could be used to connect up for USB audio/midi:

Does anyone have experience with this?
What about if I put a USB up into that? Could I link all of my elektrons to my ipad?

Cheers!

Yes, it works on my ipad mini 2, be aware that for devices that are powered by USB it might not work though, but if using the PSUs on your gear should be fine.

Edit: Never tried multiple devices connected.

Thanks! I’ll grab this then
Any recommends for apps (or a thread that has some suggestions :D) ?
I Have DT/DN/RYTM and looking at Collider to get me started?

I don’t really use music apps other than recorders/audio stuff like audioshare, audiocopy, master record.

There is an apps thread worth trawling.

@JPM you may find it pays to get one of these instead, you may not need it now, but if you need to buy this later when you’ve already got the one you pictured, you may be kicking yourself. With this one, you can use you regular USB -> lightning cable to power the iPad and the device you’re connecting.

iPads (and phones) will use the last device connected, you can only connect one at a time. So to connect all your hardware to the iPad you’re looking really at getting a nice class compliant audio interface with enough ins to record simultaneously (and hopefully across separate channels). I myself don’t have any recommendations here really :frowning: unless the interface also has USB midi ports I don’t know how you’re gonna get midi signal back (like clock out from iPad to the Elektron boxes - if you even need that).

This is exactly the problem I’m having with just my M:C right now - as soon as I plug the USB into my iPad, it wants to use that as the audio interface (in and out). I have an Air 3 with a headphone jack, so if I plug in the headphones after I plug in and turn on the M:C it’s all good, but if I didn’t have that headphone jack I don’t know what I’d do lol…

I’m no expert at this, it’s my first piece of hardware in about a decade, but I’ve been using iOS exclusively for quite some time and I think hooking up everything audio + midi over USB to an iPad is going to be pretty challenging :\

I’m working with iPad and hardware. I use steinberg interface connected to the camera connection kit. Only got 2 inputs, if you want four inputs the Roland rubix 44 is iPad compatible and a good option. I Use AUM to mix hardware in the iPad. Make sure the interface has direct monitoring option to avoid latency . If you want to use iPad effects on hardware you will notice the latency.
You could plug two elektrons into the rubix. You also have the audio inputs you can use on the digi and bigger boxes so you could use those as well. This way you could have say 4 Elektrons going into the iPad. Example digitone into analog4 Inputs and then into rubix inputs 1&2. Then digitakt into rytm into rubix inputs 3&4 etc. Rubix has midi in and out so you can send midi out and chain or use a midi thru box like quadra thru to turn one midi output into 4. Job done !! You can also attach a powered hub to the connection kit and then attach the interface to the hub which will give you extra usb Inputs for controllers.

My experience is different. I have a 3port (3 usb port) CCK and I use it to route midi from my QuNexus keyboard (which needs a host connection) to the Model:Cycles. This CCK is not made by apple.

The software that takes care of the routing is AudioBus 3

Nice tip on the Rubix! I will keep my eyes open for something like this when I’m ready to get a new interface. This is a good solution to the single interface audio / midi conundrum on iOS

No probs, I’ve done a lot of research on this over the last 12 months

Sorry I shoulda specified audio device, not midi. I think you can hook up as many of those as you can physically plug in

Also the little Korg nano’s are good controllers to plug into the usb hub and easy to apply controls to auv apps. They also have buttons on that you can connect to each auv in AUM and just press them to show each auv when you want it on or off screen, neat function in AUM.
