I know there’s been a few threads on this, but as far as i can see the last was back in 2020. Having recently got a digitakt 2 to go with my digitone (1), just wondering how are people connecting the two.
Most videos online and the digitone manual suggest DT → DN, but this seems to be older info from when the digitakts input was less capable.
With digitakt2 you have stereo, FX on the inputs and the master compressor, so its seems now its better to go DN → DT.
The only benefit i can see of running Digitakt into Digitone would be that you wouldn’t have to unplug the Digitone from the digitakts inputs if you want to sample an external synth. And you can use the digitones overdrive on the incoming signal from the digitakt.
I feel like DN → DT would be the most useful but am i missing something?
No, not really missing anything. The master overdrive would be nice, but if I wasn’t running overbridge for everything I’d probably go DN into DT for easy sampling.
I go DN to DT for ease of sampling. I also have the DT control the DN. It’s great to be able to control all the mutes and sequences from one device. Sure would be great if DT had an arp. You’d kind of expect that from a studio centerpiece that has 8 external midi tracks.
I think it depends because I agree with the advice of everyone else who posted in here, but in 2025 (I’m just imagining because I’m still stuck in the 1990’s in my head) I think that some people are using mobile devices or tablets (or computers) and might route Digitakt (physically) into Digitone’s inputs, then send Digitone via USB into the computer or mobile device where it can be recorded or have the audio sent back out over USB into Digitakt for sampling. Digitakt’s inputs would then be left freed up for additional sampling or audio processing.
You could plausibly also do this the other way around if you prefer the DT compressor to the DN’s overdrive, because DT is also an audio interface and you could pretty easily sample any DN phrases or whatever audio from the companion device back into DT. The DT inputs would be occupied, however I think you could really use the DN inputs to send audio through the external mixer and into the DT either physically via the stereo pair or on a pass-through basis coming from DN’s stereo pair inputs and then through Digitakt’s USB connection. If you were attempting to sample the compressed sounds, then I guess that this would make the most sense.
This, in my mind, is more complicated and I would rarely take advantage of such a workflow, however to people who have already started integrating apps into their musicmaking, or are involving a computer regardless, it bears to mention that there is a significant amount of flexibility in adding USB audio to your input / output / sampling / routing paradigm in 2025.
This isn’t talking about Overbridge, just your basic class compliant USB audio interface and 2-way USB audio capabilities of the Digi devices.
Thanks, good to get all the different opinions on this. There’s def plus sides to both depending on connections, at the mo i’m still just integrating the two boxes, but do want to look at connecting all up with overbridge at some point too
Oh hey, no problem at all. I was just thinking that there’s more than one way to approach this depending on the kind of gear you’re already accustomed to using, at least with the “2025” in mind. I’m still more connect the analog cables myself, but I do record a stereo track into the DAW and occasionally I use overbridge if I feel it’s really important to have a stem.
yeah totally, i think its really easy to me to start overcomplicating things, so i’m also in the same mind as just connecting things up with analog cables and recording from there.
I have been having tons of fun connecting my ipad to the Digitone II and sending midi from a sequencer called Fugue Machine Rubato (no doubt many of you will be familiar with it).
I’ve done the same with the Digitakt 2 with interesting results.
What I want to do now, is send FMR playheads 1-4 (i.e midi channels 1-4) to the Digitone, and playheads 5-8 (midi channels 5-8) to the digitakt.
Can someone explain how i would go about this please?
As always, make no assumptions about my level of understanding.
Better still, if anyone is doing this (or something comparable) and would make a very short explanatory video, that would be much appreciated.

Midi through port from one Digi to the other and block the incoming signals on the second device ? Just off the top of my head but I’d assume the usb midi can get sent out via the thru. Could be wrong though.
