Rain World is absolutely amazing! I found it in an essay book, where they talked about its amazing representation of nature.

I just downloaded Animal Well on PS+, haven’t tried it yet but visually it reminds me a lot of Rain World! Procedural animation and retro pixel art style. Anyone played Animal Well yet? I’ve been spending some time in Night City lately, but I still haven’t decided if I want to move in…

I thought these were screenshots from a Kingdom Come Deliverance mod or something. Looks awesome.

Been playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 for far too many hours. The story/ending is trite shite but at least I had fun whilst on the journey. Not sure if I’ll ever go back to the

and complete it “for real” or not but we’ll see how well Capcom supports this game in the future to come.

Dirt rally 2.0 on Ps4. The octatrack of racing games. Tried it before but it felt like a sick joke because it was so hard to stay on the road. Dont know why I started it 3 days ago but I got into it and now its one of my best games ever. It really feels like Im almost gonna die some times and I like it.

The Dirt games always seemed like something I’d love in theory. I grew up in the woods bordering on miles and miles of ex-logging roads (all dirt) and used to ride dirt bikes, go karts, mad max vehicles, etc. on them every chance I had. Later on in life, I got into Porsches, and have been driving them ever since minus a section where I had smaller kids needing to go to and from school etc. I also love watching rally races on occasion when I think about it.

So, one would think these games would be perfect for me. However, I also had trouble just staying on the road. They’re supposed to be a mix of fun and simulation, but in my experience, as soon as a game gets to be too heavy on the simulation side, they become hard to play, even with steering wheel setups. So I’ve always leaned toward full-arcade racers. (Outruns, Ridge Racers, etc. and then futuristic stuff like WipeOut, RedOut, Fast Racing, etc.)

What’s funny to me, is that never in my life of driving and racing all these vehicles did I feel like I had to work at keeping them on the road (whether in dirt, or on the street). I don’t know, I’ve just always felt pretty close to at one with any vehicle I hopped into after a few minutes of getting the nuances of the particular vehicle, bike, kart, thing, etc. and then start pushing it a bit.

Games that are heavier on simulation elements always feel like I have to overcorrect back and forth back and forth back and forth until I end up driving into something. Never had the problem in a real car, even at “naughty” speeds.

I actually bought all of the Dirt and Rally games for Steam though, so maybe I’ll give them another chance at some point, and try to push through to see if I can get some fun out of them.

I also have this thing though that I like most of my games to be things outside the realm of real life things that I could actually go do, so I play more RPGs, action games, adventure games, and arcade games. (and keep my racing to 300+ MPH  )

Speaking of those, if you even slightly like the WipeOut style of future racing, RedOut 2 is absolutely INCREDIBLE. Highly recommend it.

I clenched my jaws so hard I couldnt open my mouth and got a headache after a 3h session last night. Its not a game for kicking back and I hated it before I got the techniques down. My breakthrough came through doing the rallycross for a while.

I’ll definitely give it another try sometime. I did play one of the (Codemasters) racing games that I did really enjoy, but it didn’t have enough actual rally type Point A to Point B style tracks. It was an older one. It could have been the first Dirt, or maybe a different one. I think they had a lot of Ken Block tie-ins to it or something like that. I’m going to say it was probably a bit over 10 years ago that I played it. It had slightly more relaxed controls.

There were some older rally games that I really liked, but they look pretty primitive now. One was maybe Rally Champioship 2000 (or something close to that) where there were tracks that you could drive on for miles and miles that truly felt like proper old dirt roads. You could also go quite a ways off the track before getting reset or hitting something, and it had lots of alternate routes. It also had a good sense of speed, and decent controls, and a lot of game tuning to get things the way you liked them. A modern version of that would be amazing. You could tailor it from more simulation to more arcade, and it actually felt like it had the right effect.

Also Rallisport (originally on the original XBox and Windows) was really nice. However, if you so far as put a wheel off the main track for more than about a meter, it would totally reset you. It was kind of distracting. The rest of everything felt really nice though.

Anyway, yeah, I think I’ll give the newer Dirt games another shot. It’s been years since I tried them.

I played this for 15-20 min a couple of days ago. Thought it was cute but didn’t quite get what the raving reviews were all about. Today I played for another 30 minutes and at one point something happened (after the ghost dog and the disc) and I felt a wave of joy and surprise that I used to feel when I was playing video games as a kid. I’m not obsessed yet, but I’m beginning to understand…

Give me the pleasure of testing this marvel. The variety and quality of the gameplay is succulent. I followed the development very closely, the developer did tailor-made work. Don’t be fooled by appearances, a great racing game with perfect rally-style drifting.

I actually have that! I have a bunch of games just like it too. I haven’t tried them all, but my brother got me a couple, then I got a couple more.

Off the top of my head these are the ones I had been playing a bit:

Art of Rally
Mini Motor Racing EVO
Circuit Superstars

As soon as I get a chance I will give Star Drift a whirl! I just hadn’t gotten to it yet.

Just came to recommend this too. Wasn’t expecting much as the screenshot and trailer don’t relay much other than the core system, but man is it a blast. Diverse level design and new power mechanics for each one. Really fun and charming design. I’m nor much of a platform guy but they did the platforming bits in a way which don’t make you want to throw your controller in the trash. Had a great time playing it with my son. Might be good for marriage consoling too, although there are moments in which that could backfire.
