Comparing the Tonverk to Digitakt 1, 2 and Octatrack

I think I can just use the compressor on the bass as an insert effect in fact. Will try that out
Edit : in fact sidechain option only works on mix track so it will indeed impact the kick. From the user guide:

For example, if you set SCS to TRK1 where you have a kick drum, every time the kick drum plays, the compressor lowers the overall sound of the mix. This paramater isonly available when the compressor is used on the Mix track.

One thing I noticed about putting a compressor on the track effects is the box for assigning a sidechain trigger is (currently) blank where on the master you can assign it. I haven’t looked if you can assign it when the compressor is on a Bus. Maybe check that too?

Or maybe trigs on the track will trigger the track compressor so copy & paste the trig patter from the kick track? Are triggerless trigs a thing on TV

IDK

Thanks, yes indeed the sc option is only available on the mix track

Ah ok, so for now we send the kick via a different out I guess. Maybe there will be a mix track bypass in an update. Like the compressor one in the digis.

Good to know, I added that to the table.

I’m curious: Do you have other gear that can be used as a source for drum sounds, or are you planning to rely on a library of samples?

Personally I’d love to see a successor to AR (or ST) based on Tonverk architecture, i.e. with effects and busses, preferably with the sample layer the AR has.

A few reasons.

  1. I wasn’t bowled over by the analog machines, it’s not a slight I just didn’t fall in love with them on the AR so found myself using samples a lot and TV wins hands down here.
  2. My perc arrangements tend to be lean, carefully arranged or ‘minimal’ so 12 track is overkill from an arrangement perspective.
  3. Effects are better/more flexible in TV
  4. Sequencer overload. I’m putting this out there, 5 Elektron sequencers is too many :joy:

Sorry didn’t answer your question: I have an A4 which makes IMO better analogue drum sounds than AR, quite a lot to do with the envelope shapes as well as multiple voices. I have a DN2 also which makes killer drums. So yes I’m good for drum synthesis when the mood takes me.

I would never sell mine, but those are fair reasons, especially:

Sequencer overload. I’m putting this out there, 5 Elektron sequencers is too many :joy:

Personally, the not a drum things the AR Mk2 does are why I’ve never wanted to sell mine:

  • 3 1/2 bass/acid synths
  • SID Station lite
  • analog compression
  • analog distortion and overdrive
  • analog filter bank (try routing tracks from DAW through it!)

Running drum and non drum samples through it, or going down a synthesis hole, I usually end up with something unique, and never clean.

I honestly barely use it for just drums anymore…

Quick update: I found that Tonverk in its current state is not for me, so I extended my private copy of the comparison table with a few more devices to figure out what to get instead (I settled on a Blackbox for now).

I might release that extended table eventually as a google sheet, but this will take some time, because the features in the table are centered on Elektron style hardware, and I need to figure out how to make a few things more generic.

I made a copy of the table and added the akai Force
here it is, hosted on github

Is an Akai Scene the same as an OT scene?

yes and no, the Force has scenes like ableton but also has a crossfader with side A and B where any track can be assigned to (can be changed on the fly), the crossfader can also be assigned any parameter (including midi CC) for both A and B and it has a bank of 16 crossfader
