Compact battery-powered midi keyboard?

Hi all!

I’m looking for a good small/compact midi keyboard (1 or 2 octave is enough), preferrably with midi out TRS (or MIDI DIN), and battery powered. something of a mod wheel (or strip) would be nice too.

I’m afraid this doesn’t exist?
I have an arturia keystep 37 already, but its usb powered, and quite large.

How about every single Korg Volca except the Modular?

yamaha reface series, although - stupid midi dongle…

thanks, but i’d like something smaller indeed

Something like korg nanokey (and nanokey studio) → very nice, but no midi trs/DIN out… which is a shame.

Oxi one sequencer is nice, battery powered, has midi TRS out, but is not a keyboard.

not a bad suggestion, it has MIDI DIN out I see?

ehm, the volca’s have midi IN, not out, or am i mistaken? also not really a keyboard

A small battery pack would open up more options, if you’re struggling. OG Keystep runs on one for example

true but prefer to keep things cordless as much as possible.

seems like it just doesnt exist, i’m sure there would be a market for it haha

its kind of a dongle, if you loose it you will have a bad time.
that dongle has 2 midi din, but yamaha specific jack on the keyboard side.

Reface photos available in my FS post. You need the included dongle for DIN MIDI. The Refaces are not smaller than the Keystep.

I think all the Volcas have MIDI out on the PCB, you have to drill a hole and run some wires.

aha, not ideal, but best bet till now. how long does it work on batteries?

never driven mine with batteries. can’t tell.

haha if I was so technical I’d make such a keyboard myself and sell it haha

I have the op-1 field, which is also awesome, but only midi over bluetooth, or usb.

A few cms of cord, and velcro the pack to the side. If you can’t find another option :man_shrugging:

does the keystep 37 work with a battery pack? any tips?

Maybe someone can confirm. The OG does, so I’d be hopeful. Just googled it and ended up back at this thread

Anything that takes USB power can be powered by a battery pack. 5v is 5v, the device has no way of knowing whether it is being powered by a battery or a power adapter. Anything that takes barrel power can almost certainly be powered by a battery pack, but it may take a little more effort to find a suitable cable.

Keyboards like the Samson Graphite M25 or an Akai LPK25 are probably closest to what you want, but you will need something else to host and power them. RK006 should do the job.

Qunexus (Keith Mcmillen) may do the job. They now offer a dongle (NOT their previous bulky midi host) with 5 pin midi. No battery though.
