I have a 2015 pro with lightning & it’s definitely class compliant, my 15+ year old x-station works with it as an audio interface amazingly, although it needs powering externally. I’ve also got an ancient Roland sound capture that works. I wish everything was class compliant.

No probs. A smaller interface could be used for sure, if you wish to work with 3.5mm mini jacks. Non powered smaller interfaces can reduce your battery life, but will be great for field work.
