Cheapest Portable Groovebox

Sonicware Liven Lofi 12. Often around $200 on Reverb or $239 new. Runs on batteries. Sketch away. Done.

OP is looking for something more portable than model:samples

and an alternative to an iPad screen (presumably less reliant on a screen)

Yeah, I know thanks

I wonder if he realizes just how lightweight the model samples is…

And is it really only 4 PO’s? Might be 4 1/4…

133 KO is the best u can get at that size and price for sketchpad device.
Above that are devices that are 100$ more expensive and substantially bigger, or a used OG circuit.

Sonicware devices are cool. If u want something like a portable DT1 with built in FX then look at lofi 12-XT, but again, i wouldnt call it cheap cheap.

Dirtwave M8 is another fully capable groovebox at pocket operator size, and you can find them for around 350 for a used mk1. But its not really a fast sketch pad.

My vote goes to the Roland T-8. Truly portable, just chuck in a bag without worrying. Acid techno on the go!

Ok, so, I had the model:cycles and if I find an extremely good deal I would buy with my eyes closed.
However that is quite big and heavy to be called 100% portable
Still, two great machines. Everytime someone talks about them I want to buy them once again. Luckily I don’t have infinite money.

To make it short: great machine, to some extent portable but can’t compare with a PO, Dirtywave, Tracker Mini, Op-Z

Comparable to circuit tracks for sure

So far the most interesting.
Do you think I can make even some hip-hop lofi things?

Also, please, if someone ever had a Soma Rumble Of Ancient Times say something about it
I can’t comprendo what it really is

Ok I see what you’re lookin for, in that case I’d prob go with an Polyend tracker mini

…yup…watch out for 2nd hand model cycles and just be happy…

it’s the most sturdy and timeless little no brainer groovebox synth u’ll ever find…

and makes a perfect match for somebody u uses the ipad as a centerpiece…

if i gad to pick a standalone music pocket device, i’d choose the dirtywave m8 tracker, these days…once u wrap ur head around it’s workflow, it’s really a handy klak klak zak zak flying hypergadget…what and where ever u may roam…

Yeah yeah but I actually substituted the m8 with iPad.
Now I am just looking for something nice and easy and durable to do random things on

Over my budget but they did a nice thing with that little last upgrade.
If you are searching for a complete groovebox that + a midi controller can be your path.
Check out also the M8 tracker

Wow man, never found 350€ M8 but yeah, I’d suggest that too if you are searching for a portable groovebox and don’t want to take the iPad path.
Sonicware isn’t as portable as I’d like
The EP-133 is definitely something I’d look into, maybe if the prices on the 2nd hand market drop

I’ve had a think about this and I think

POs very limited, but Arcade and KO can do something
Volcas again very limited, but sampler can do the basics

Aira Minis - T8 probably the best overall option, but limited

EP-133 , Circuit Tracks and Rhythm maybe a bit big / expensive, but close to ideal otherwise

M8, Tracker Mini perfect, but too expensive

I’d love the Compact Aira series to be expanded with something that’s a little more than the current crop. Something similar to the T-8 except it allows for the drums to be replaced by samples you load over usb (even if it just had one kit at a time). Continue to have the 303 style bass, but then also squeeze in a poly or chord track and a lead track. I know the idea is that you buy two or three of these to use together, but I’d really appreciate it all in one box for when I’m travelling. The T-8 has taken it in the right ā€œgrooveboxā€ direction, the S-1 has shown how powerful this form factor can be, lets have a pro version that’s competitive with the woovebox and m8. I’d pay twice the price of a T-8.

Oh and then class compliant multi-track audio over usb.

I guess they would say they have it and it’s called an MC-101

I expect the next version will be smaller and have a LIon battery.

Yeah. I’d like it to be in the actual Compact Aira form factor, with usb-c, built-in battery, class compliant audio and midi over usb. Plenty of knobs.

I can’t argue that functionally the mc-101 sort of fulfils the brief, but it’s definitely not what I want.

Yeah, and while you can get a nice bassline going, the MC-101 isn’t that great at making acid if that’s your thing.

Mc-101 looks like a menu-diving nightmare
The aira boxes looks so nice tho
They had a nice idea and putting them together in one unit would be amazing
