Hey man, apologies for the delay, been traveling for work, so only seeing this now.
Personally I much prefer the MDR-7506 over my DT770s. The Sonys are more balanced, more pleasant, more revealing and less fatiguing to my ears. But I’m also particularly sensitive to higher frequencies, so that BRIGHT Beyerdynamic sound is mad tiring & tedious to me — many I’m sure would disagree.
The Sonys are incredible for that price, build quality is somewhat flimsy (compared to the DT770) but comfort is on point still (at least to me) and I just really enjoy their sound signature. I love them for jamming and composing, never mix on headphones though, so can’t speak to that. That said, if I would ever try to mix on cans, I’d try on open-backs, eg my Sennheiser HD650s or AKG702s.
Thanks, very helpful. I think I will buy a pair. Regarding mixing with headphones, I don’t really do it much either but sometimes I do some more detailed mixing on headphones to e.g. get stereo field balancing right or when zooming in on a particular frequency range and reference listening against another track. For most mixing tasks, I depend on my studio monitors.
I honestly don’t think you can beat the Hifiman Edition XS at their current price. Planar magnetic and relatively easy to drive. The soundstage is incredible and the bass accuracy is some of the best from what I’ve seen.
The Capra Audio comfort strap is a must, but it’s super cheap.
I used to use the Sonys for ages. I found out they were coloring the sound. I used the Sound ID reference app to discover that. Once I calibrated them I could hear such a difference between the Sonys and what was actually a flat response. I switched over to the ATH50x when my Sonys wore out from use. Nice price and overall functionality. I use them now religiously but also Sound ID to calibrate. I cannot recommend that software enough regardless of the cans you use.
I ended up finally buying a pair of headphones today. Randomly stumbled over a pair of nearly unused/mint ATH-M50x for less than 55 EUR. A no-brainer for me. So now I’m set in the closed headphones department at least.
Nice, good headphones. I find them a bit hyped in the bass-end, but headphones always will have some sort of signature, so if you like the sound it‘s all good. 55€ is an amazing deal, congrats!
Yes, fair. I never expect headphones to be „flat“ - especially in that price category. Even my expensive monitors are not really flat in my room, it‘s always a matter of learning the speaker/headphone and working with that. Personally I quite like the Sony MDR-7506‘s signature, I find them well balanced and fun.
Yeah I have a tendency to mix with too much bass when sketching out new songs. That’s typically when I’m using headphones too, plugged straight into the jack of the Digitone 2 or MPC for example. This means I often have to dial down the bass once I’m mixing in the studio and comparing against references. So a bit of bass hype in this early phase is probably a good thing for me to save me from having to make too many adjustments later in the process.
I have had them for about a week, I got the NDH 30 first and sent them back because they didn’t fit right and I found the mids really harsh.
The OLLO X1 are far more comfortable and much nicer sounding than the NDH 30 as far as I’m concerned. Even without the correction they are very nice.
I have been using K712 Pro with Sonarworks/Realphones for the last few years and they sound quite similar but the OLLO have better low end. I won’t be sending these back.
