Unfortunately, it’s really hard to hear the onward in the demonstration video. I hope chase bliss will release a video manual soon, as they did for most of their other recent pedals, those are great.
A brief Knobs demo, haha https://youtu.be/EbM6o5_dsNE?si=3OcGhGEJ18KKfymx
Some sound examples without anyone talking. Onward seems to be able to go bonkers quite quickly with just a few twists of knobs. It’s hard to tell what’s really happening without seeing what’s played on the guitar and the mix all the way up all the time.
Lol, so now we know Onward can probably make some ugly, harsh noises and unusable blips and bloops - or maybe it’s just Mood MK II.
Unusable is a pretty relative term here. I’d use all of those
I mean, it’s a dynamic sampling pedal with distortions and a dedicated error knob, so it’s bound to get glitchy
But I agree with @RustyRoses, it’s all relative. There’s places where sounds like that would fit and others where they absolutely wouldn’t. Even the most beautiful sounding FX or instruments can ruin a song if you put them in at the wrong time or on the wrong instrument. Or others might dig what I would deem ruined, it’s all a matter of taste, I guess.
Kinda feels like the most Elektron-y pedal they’ve made so far. Seems like they’re almost making it obvious using the Rytm and Digitone at Superbooth as sound sources. Just wish we could hear more examples with those machines!
Also gives me mid-00s Autechre vibes. Really excited to fck sht up with this one.
Yeah, this feels exactly right for what I want.
Glitch madness, from mild to utterly destroyed, and real-time at that.
Mood MkII is really good for getting an ambience - texture and short loops that you can smear with reverb and produce a bed.
This is much more like what I can get from Beads when pushed to the limit.
Yeah I was hesitant to use that word, you’re right it’s all subjective. To me, it’s more on the „well it’s cool the pedal can change minimal input to unrecognizable things, but how would I ever use that in my music“ side of things. But of course people might get a lot out of that, I just haven’t heard that much music where people actually use that stuff, but maybe I‘m also just not the audience. I can see this more as „feed and record, chop slices and see where you can take it with a sampler“ material.
I also hope the pedal can give you quite „musical“ results with its envelope like features. Throw the glitchy stuff on top of that and I can see this being some kind of lo fi synth where my voice becomes the oscillator.
feed it into an ottobit jr for more musical results
I’ve always wanted to try that pedal. And it’s WYSIWYG (not treasure hunt).
But if you did want a treasure hunt you could have someone hide it on you occasionally.
Or maybe they should be called FAAFO pedals.
I’m surprised no one has named a pedal that yet. This is your chance to cash in!
My kids do this with my car every now and then! So much fun!
I bet!
I am not surprised. Imagine all the legal disclaimers you would have to put on that pedal to cover for any unintended misuse.
There’s no such thing as bad publicity. A lengthy court case will keep those pedals selling like hotcakes.
“Your honor, I just had to find out.”
Really gonna have to disagree that collector mode is a gimmick. Mainly how I use the Habit is to feed it with relatively simple building blocks for the 3 minutes it takes to fill the buffer, sometimes play along on the second go around, and then stop feeding it altogether and start playing the various modes and knobs until I find interesting sweet spots. I did about a 20 minute “jam” this evening that was a pretty transcendent experience and I think has generated some really useful material to sample and build upon. Parts of it, anyway.
Other times I’ll feed it some pretty sparse material then go downstairs and clean the kitchen or something and come back to see what it’s come up with, bit more hit and miss but often interesting.
Admittedly, there’s always a strong temptation to mush everything down into yr classic “ambient” textures using the A1 pitch delay, and it can sound really pleasing when you do so, but I’ve had enjoyable run outs with e.g hat patterns coming out of plaits and percussion loops. I’ve yet to really try it with drums or breaks, but I’m looking forward to doing so, don’t see any reason why it won’t end up spitting out weird and wonderful results in just the same way.
So, I pretty much think that collector mode is the core of Habit, I haven’t switched off the dip switch for months and months. It feels more like an instrument than an effects pedal to me - I also have a Mood MKII which I haven’t clicked with in at all the same way, but I’ve also not had it as long.
New one definitely looks intriguing to me but personally I feel like I have a lot of exploring left to do with the Habit and especially Mood before really being able to figure out what it offers that’s different or over and above these two.
Speaking of collections: meanwhile in a galaxy far far away T.E. are now the gallery exhibits
Yes, the tables and wood dolls we all appreciate so much!
