As the title suggests.
My main Daw till now was always Live. However few years back i bought Reaper cause i heard good things. Never used it till today though and am trying to make a fresh start. That said, of the most attractive arguments that would lead me to use it more than not at all would be if anyone here can tell me if i can record
all Channels of the Digitakt 2 into the Daw without trickery etc.
Cause Live unfortunately has this 16 Channels restriction for multichannel Vsts i never understood but it is what it is.
Right now i am completely overwhelmed by then new Environment in Reaper and
dont have the nerve to study it deeply currently.
If what i am asking is not possible in Reaper then it wont be a priority to start using it for now.
Would appreciate your experiences if you had any with this setup and
can tell me how well it works in real life
Thank but i will definitely not want to pay someone 70 for some basic information.
I will find out eventually. Not a priority for now. When the time comes again
will first try to ask the Reaper support first. Its just a „is it possible“ level question at present not a „how to“ yet.
Thank you for the suggestion though
Appreciated
Ah, sry for my answer, as it was more about “reaper”. And you are right 70$ for a simple answer is a bit much. I started looking this up for you maybe this helps:
Digitakt 2 with Overbridge 2 streams up to 42 channels total over USB.
The Digitakt 2 has 16 tracks (each can be stereo now) + main out + separate stereo sends for Delay/Reverb/Chorus + external inputs. Overbridge turns this into 42 channels total streaming over USB (Main L/R = channels 1-2, Tracks 1-16 L/R = 3-34, then the three FX pairs + Ext In push it to 42).
Reaper has zero artificial limit on channels per track or per VST. You should easily be able to run the full 42 channels from one Overbridge instance.
Damn.
By all the frustration with Ableton i got tunnel vision and did literally not think of this. I made a problem bigger when there is a solution, just a different one than what i was looking for.
Can`t say i feel very intelligent right now but i am very thankful to you for taking the time to help and helping me get back on track.
Much appreciated
Thank you so much.
As i wrote in my comment below, i had honestly forgoten this option.
I have so much going on in the software domain from every possible application and task that i have completely lost overview and am jumping across things trying to keep it all together.
Thank you. I will do exactly that
You’re welcome, I know that moment getting your head around hardware+software can be mind boggling sometimes. I try to get my head around a Squarp Hapax and different Elektrons and midi routings using them partialy like a drummachine (triggered by single notes) and useing some tracks as synths (whole keyboard range) while also using a neuzeit drop for controlling specific paramters and I’m thinking about this since days, consulting forums and AI for help/ideas how to get that setup going^^ And I think I read somewhere, that Overbridge specifically has the “grouping output/channel” function because of Abletons Limit of 16 channels per VST
I have thought about this for ableton but always stop and think “f this. Why should i give away all flexibility when there is a another way`?”
Of course sometimes its best to simply move on even with compromises, however it is not the sole best and universal solution at times. Sometimes you simply need to go deeper into detail.
That said, it sounds like quite the setup labyrinth you go going on. Wishing you to find a solution soon. I wish i could help but this is completely out of my workflow architecture
Something I found out while asking about Torso T1 Squencer is, that the Syntakt(and eventually elektrons in general?) prefers midi notes/triggers over the step triggers of the internal sequencer (so they cant work in parallel using triggerless trigs), but that opens up the possibility to use single trigerless trigs with just parameter locks as per machine “effects” and patterns as “sound changing kits”.
For Triggers on single tracks on the sequencer:
Because the parameter locks are not triggered but rather get active when you press the paramtere locked trigger you can use it as punch in effect as long as you press the button (for a single track).
For patterns:
When changed the settings of the tracks (machines) take over but more in a hold fasion across all tracks as the pattern gets active and stays active (I’m still trying to figure out if this would work with single step length patterns to switch fast between different “sound kits / patterns” rather than waiting for a 16 step pattern to end and another to start).
My Idea:
Sequence externally using the hapax and on the Syntakt use the same Tracks for Kick/ snare / hihats and so on throughout patterns, so the sequences via the hapax are the same (like Midi1-Ch1(or Note C?) always for kick using triggering via hapex patterns), and i want to use the Syntakts patterns as pre defined sound-kits, tracks are the same “machine-wise” kick will stay a kick but with different settings across the patterns.
What would be great is to have the hapax trigger the tracks on the syntakt, and changing the syntakts pattern change the whole sound-kit (machine settings on the different tracks). With the possibility to have (when the syntakt has just 4 step long patterns) have punch in FX when choosing a track and pressing the parameter locked trigger.
Yeah and that fractal construct lives in my head folding itself over. And also a tipp when consulting AI for answers is to use grok, as Chat GPT straight up pulls stuff out of thin air. Grok seems to cross check and can be fed one or multiple manuals while cross checking in forums and on the web…
