Can I mute my pattern but still play the sound manually?

I have a simple pattern on my track to trig my sample. But it’s busier than how I want to start. To transition into it, I want to trig a sample manually a few times before I have my programmed pattern take over. When I Mute (Function+Track) I can no longer trig the sample manually. The track is fully silenced.

I have an Analog Keys and an Octatrack. With Analog Keys I can “mute” a track and still manually play the keys.

I wonder if I hit a setting mistakenly? I thought this was something I was able to do before… Is there an option for this I might have set? Is there another approach to Mute the pattern only but not manual play?

Thanks!

the first solution that popped into my head was:

why not begin with an OT pattern that has no trigs on the track you’re interested in? with the OT in its (default) TRIG mode and the track unmuted, you could leave the sequencer running and trig the track’s sample freely as you describe. then when you’re ready, just switch to an OT pattern that has your simple trig sequence on that track.

Thanks for following up. So first off are you saying that it is true when a track is muted you can not make the samples play? I thought about it more and it might be that the muted state disconnects the trigs in the pattern from the machine? And thus manual trigs get cutoff too? It kinda only makes sense. Probably the machine can’t tell if a trig is manual or already sitting in a pattern waiting for it’s time. But yet it works with the AKeys so that’s why I was suspecting I had unknowingly ticked an option via mistaken hotkey or something.

As far as your solution -----
Yea I think there are a lot of ways I could do it. To be honest I think right now I am still just “getting my legs” with the set up  I am so excited by all the possibilities with this gear!!!

What I am doing is messing about and programming up a full ensemble loop with all things firing, and then wanting to break it down in to constituent parts. Dubbing it I suppose.

The planing to have a pattern to go to feels a bit rigid as I want to do the same with multiple elements. Every time I start to jam, I end up taking a different path, which is SO INCREDIBLY COOL! but If I have to step from pattern to pattern, I worry it will get stiff. Though really I think its a matter of practice

Ah while writing this I stopped to try a fresh un-touched project. Reset all if you will. Still the behavior continues as i describe. BUT it did lead me to the Quick Mute trig method that has promise for what I am talking about for sure. But it will mean I can only have trigs where the pattern already says. Might be for the best anyway.

Ah, so this all led me to the thread about a petition to add a true sequencer mute. Which included the Plays free option, which gives me what I want. Though having it buried in a menu is a bummer. Maybe they can ad a key combo to toggle plays free on and off. That would be cool!

Lots more to learn, but that’s what i know so far.

Actually Plays Free seems pretty great. Does give me what I was asking about. I can tickle and tease a sound a few times and when ready kick in the full sequence. Using the Pattern Len quantizing for starters which is ok but not the same as a trig mute which would allow unmuting in mid sequence and get pick up effects.

But still its pretty cool.

I haven’t tried this myself, but you could maybe use one of the midi tracks set to the same channel as your sample track (you would need to plug in a midi cable out to in - don’t know if that would cause other issues, you would probably have to turn off the note send for the sample tracks) but then you could mute the sequence without muting the track. The added bonus of this is that you acquire 3 extra lfos, and an arp for your sample mangling needs.

WOW that is a killer idea! I will need to meditate before I think I can take on the challenge… But I will report back how it works. I have never even cracked open the Midi side of my OT. I just have it send start and stop and sequence the A4. Still this is really a creative idea, thanks! I do feel this gear just continually shows itself to be deeply thought out. So cool.
