Cable management

Hello, i am having hard time to understand reaching the correct instruments anytime i want. Sometimes i want to start Cubase+Midi keyboard (SH-201)
Other Times Digitakt+Midi keyboard (SH201)

Please see attached picture and correct me if you see something wrong. Can i just settle down with connection and no need to alter anymore.

Get a midi patchbay. I personally like the older simple ones. If you dig around you should be able to find an 8x8 for less than you paid for those midi solutions boxes.

Can you give an idea of what you want the setup to look like? What do you see as the primary source of clock? Do you want the SH-201 to be able to play other midi devices?

hurt my brain just looking at that. it would definitely help to know what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’re having trouble with.

SH-201 midi out --> Digitakt midi in Auto Channel 7 (SH-201 RX channel set to 7 )
Digitakt midi out --> Midi Solutions Quadra in, from here out to 4 different devices (Moog, XV-5050, SH-201 and PC)
In this case I can’t use SH-201 to record into Cubase. I don’t want Digitakt to involve just Open up Cubase and record something

Right now i am also confused which one is what? You guys should be expert on this right?
Digitakt Track channel 1 to 8 off
Track A ch 1 XV-5050
Track B ch 2 XV-5050
Track C ch 3 XV-5050
Track D ch 4 XV-5050
Track E ch 5 XV-5050
Track F ch 6 XV-5050
Track G ch 7 SH-201
Track H ch 8 Moog

Seriously it’s all messed up right now. I forget what i am doing. Need to face to problem happen again.

haha if you don’t understand what you’re doing, how are we supposed to solve it?

my advice would be plug the 201 into your computer first. that way, when you want to record MIDI from it into Cubase you can. and just run something like MIDI Patchbay to route from 201 thru computer to DT. then out of DT into your thru box, out to the other devices.

but honestly it’s all easier if you just decide once and for all who will be your sequencer. if you’re going to sometimes use DT and sometimes Cubase, you’re going to have to swap some cables every now and then.

yes, easiest solution is just swapping cables for the moment -

you can always record audio in cubase without midi connection (set the same tempo on cubase and your hardware and fix the position in cubase later)

i´d experiment with the possibilities you have right now and learn
more about MIDI (sync, CCs, MIDILoop etc.) first.
Connecting pretty much all Ins and Outs ends up in a complete
mess very easily.

Cubase and your Interface is nothing else than any other Instrument MIDIwise btw.

Divide and conquer.

Digitakt out > in Sh201 out > in Zoom out > in Digitakt
Start by getting this right first. Get these connected how you want with the channels and midi settings on all devices. Get the clock situated. Even try the Digitakt with Sh201 ONLY first then add the Zoom.

Digitakt Thru > xv > thru moog.
Do this second. Add XV on the thru. Does everything still work?
Clock from Zoom or via Sh201 via Digitakt.

I don’t think you need to purchase anything.

I already bought those.

There are 2 possibilities

Scenario 1 Cubase
SH-201 out needs to go “Zoom in” and Zoom sends to XV-5050, Moog, SH-201. Digitakt is okay because connected with USB

Scenario 2 Digitakt
SH-201 out needs to go “Digitakt in” and Digitakt sends to XV-5050, Moog, Zoom, SH-201

Now practice
All the controlling gears “midi out” goes to midi merger.
PC, SH-201, Digitakt midi out–> Midi merger

In this case, if i didn’t turn on digitakt, only pc and SH-201 is open. Midi will transmit to merger. I press a key on the SH-201 or Cubase piano roll, it will transmit to merger isn’t it?

And all the slave gears will receive midi data
Midi merger has 4 ins and 2 outs (right now 3 used already) and Midi Thru Box 1 in 4 outs.
Now, from midi merger out goes to thru box and from thru box 4 X out to the slaves

Full system is open
When i press a key on SH-201, (it’s not directly connected to Digitakt’s midi in)
SH-201–> Merger in–> Merger out–> Thru in–> Thru out–> Digitakt in
When i press a trig in Digitakt, want it to reach Moog (receive ch 8)
Digitakt–> Merger in–> Merger out–> Thru in–> Thru out–> Moog

I am writing these i am loosing or i maybe describe something stupid already. I watch some Bobeats midi setup suggestions and try my own situation. But you can still correct me

Hey
Not sure this is going to help but you seem to have 2 setups: 1 for DAW and another for DAWless?
If this is the case we are in the same boat.

Here is what’s working for me:

Digitakt out to Keystep in
Keystep out to Kenton midi thru 5
Kenton midi thru 1 to Volca Bass midi Ch 9 Track A
Kenton midi thru 2 to Volca Keys midi Ch 9 Track A
Kenton midi thru 3 to Volca FM midi Ch 9 Track A
Kenton midi thru 4 to MicroFreak midi Ch 12 Track D
Kenton midi thru 5 to Deepmind 12 midi Ch 10 Track B
Deepmind 12 thru to MiniNova midi Ch 11 Track C

Notes:

  1. Keystep jumpers have to be switched from USB to MIDI whether I am jamming DAWless (midi) or with DAW (usb). Soft Thru activated on midi control center.
  2. Digitakt setup to send/receive notes. Receives Sync from USB. Out and thru port set to midi.
Digitakt auto Ch is 16. FX Ch is 15
I get to use then Ch 13 and 14 (Tracks E and F) to control whatever VSTi/VST FX in my DAW (If need be).
  3. I rarely use the 3 Korg Volcas together so this is why I share the same midi channel

This way the only physical change I have to do in my setup is on the Keystep

Hope this helps.

Feel free to pm

Best,
V
