While looking for a TM-1 to pair with my MD, I noticed they’re hitting $400 used on ebay now. I don’t want to pay that, considering I’ve heard there can be OS and driver issues on modern systems. So instead, I’ve been experimenting with reverse engineering and replicating the functionality with my own hardware.
Currently I’m getting stable sample transfers and sysex dumps at up to 8x speed!
Right now the thing looks like this, with a lil digit display for turbo speed and connection status, and TRS jacks for the midi in and out:
I’m at a point where it’s usable enough for me to consider this first prototype finished, and I’m thinking next I’ll try learn enough PCB design to make it into a little self contained thing that can withstand more use than this mess of wires.
If I make some PCBs I’ll post updates, because I bet they’ll be spares that could be useful to other pre-usb box owners out there! ![]()
