Hey folks,
I’m in the (re)design process of my studio.
My idea is to build it in a modular fashion …or more groups of synths (for example DN + DT + OT = Group 1; AR + A4 = Group 2)
I wanna build those groups as “always ready” … that means good cable management (hidden) but now I’m considering buying speakers for each setup as well. My room is really weird. Or maybe my idea and this is where I’d like to hear your opinion:
I know a perfect studio setup would be a soundtreated room with a desk and a fixed position for optimal sound. But that is obviously not how I think it should be. More like 2-3 stations I could put my groups to — so my idea is kinda like this:
Having 3 modular stations with a speaker setup (thinking those Genelecs 8030 RAW) - each on a rolling tray and just 3 cables to hook up the Groups to the stations.
Station = Speakers (Genelecs), audio interface (MOTU 828), powersocket + Group of synths I can just plug&play onto this station
I mean my idea is — since I am a synths hoarder who doesn’t want to sell his gear — to create a playground where I can easily and quickly exchange groups and put a new group into my studio.
Is this a dumb idea? Consider I’m using more than one group at a time… I’d still need to sit in that “one” sweetspot for a good sound … but if those stationgroups are distributed in a triangle … it’d mess with the stereo image.
So is this a completely bonkers idea without a good solution? Am I the only one who is annoyed from that ordinary setup with just 2 speakers and a desk?
I use headphones while jamming with my hardware and don’t pay that much attention to mixing while at it. Then I record to DAW and mix at my desk with combination of speakers and headphones.
It’s not bonkers idea if you like listening with speakers and having good stereo image is important. Good monitors are cheap-ish nowadays anyways (e.g. LSR305).
Oh, you mean having them blasting from multiple directions at the same time? That sounds kinda bad tbh, but I’m no surround expert. Can you figure out for example a single extra spot of speaker placement for your jamming purposes that isn’t the main desk? If the main desk position isn’t working for you. Personally I feel it’s alright to jam with monitors even outside of the listening window.

Yeah I’m looking for a solution for multi speaker setup I guess. Quadraphonic … or Hexaphonic … Octaphonic??
Maybe it’d be possible to have a circle / quad in the center of the room with okay’ish audio from all the stations?
Or a permanent quadraphonic setup where the speakers hang in each of the four upper corners of the room??
Each corner of the room might work fine but you’d probably want to add a sub with crossover to center the lows. Maybe check audiosciencereview forums, this seems something they might have discussed there.

that’s a good tip with the sub. I guess I’ll go with a multi speaker setup. Maybe even something like true surround with 6+ speakers?
Like having a room and a control unit to place the sounds where I want / need some. I could probably even track my position with microwave technology.
Hmm… I think this would be a cool project. Just maybe a bit more complicated without using Max4Live/DAWs to route/control everything.
