My megafm, had it 2 or 3 years, suddenly: burned smell, thats it.
Miss it.

And my lxr does what it want. I don’t count that as defect, more like random bug encounters.

once i bought Command Station MP-7 for parts — but managed to reinstall the boot loader and update the OS, so now it’s working, with partially malfunctional pads & buttons (requires spares to repair).

also, once i managed to fry something in my PreenFM2 (plugged wrong PSU in).
my technician repaired it.

I had a Focusrite interface stop working. Turned out the power adapter had failed. They sent out a free replacement.

I was worried it might take them a while to get it to me, so I also bought an aftermarket one from myVolts to hedge my bets. The one from Focusrite arrived the next day; the one from myVolts took the best part of a week.

Got a used Kaossilator 2S. Turns out, one internal button had fallen off already. Still used it a bit (it wouldn’t be enjoyable even in great condition anyway), then the screen died.

Moved into another city in late 2022, the humidity claimed a lot of gear, still haven’t fixed most of it:

  • Roland Alpha Juno 1 - doesn’t turn on anymore
  • Retrokits RK-005 - completely dead
  • Novation Bass Station 2 - many pots are misbehaving, plus the rubber coating got moldy
  • Korg Monotribe - the sequencer started glitching out, my friend repaired it
  • Korg Monotron Delay - LFO stops working if I switch to square
  • Polyend Medusa - some LEDs light up when they shouldn’t
  • Dr Scientist Bitquest - the fuzz stopped working
  • Wampler Sovereign - cuts off the sound when engaged

Don’t let humidity destroy your gear.

Beyerdynamics DT880 bought in 1998, cable issues dec ‘24.
Roland Jx-305 bought 1998 worked flawlessly untill 2 weeks ago (used it as mastermidi keyboard last decade) it suddenly won’t boot anymore.

Aturia keystep - It worked well, ate some dust, traveled and got banged up but still lasted for years. It’s in the trash now but I have no complaints.

Motu 828 and M8 - Both broke down after some time due to incompetent engineering or planned obsolesence (hot caps). The M8 didn’t work on PC for about a year after release and broke down after a few years. Ownership of both was a nightmare, stay away.

Reverbs

Sony HR-MP5 FX units. They were the increasingly flakey initial I replaced the internal battery, then they were just occasionally flakey.

Replaced them with a Rolands SRV-3030 which was less flakey, but still too unreliable for live use.

Bought an Eventide Space which eventually needed service, now it’s back to perfectly reliable.

Oh god, my workbench of doom.

1/3 received broken somehow (intentionally to fix or not disclosed by seller), 1/3 broke while using, 1/3 me disassembling to mod/bend and then not able to put back together for time, while the fixings lept out into the universe.

I’ve only lived in humid areas, I guess my gear is kept pretty climate protected but hurricanes definitely fuck things up.

For it being such a solid and heavy unit, I sure went through a lot of cry-baby wah wah pedals back in the day. I don’t know if the build quality is better these days but at one point I had a back up pedal on hand “just in case” because they kept breaking (not physically, but functionally).

We need @sezare56 to tell us about all of his broken pocket operators too.

Oh these spoiled children toys…too small to be repared. I won’t talk about it more, I just won’t buy anything from them, even if they drastically improved everything. Really bad experience.
(Personal point of view, enjoy your expensive compact gear !)

I remember a ribbon thing about it, I was about to buy a faulty one.

On topic, I had bad experiences with B-Stock products, now I avoid them. If a product is faulty and if the buyer don’t want it to be repaired and wait, they may want to return it WITHOUT SAYING it is faulty.

I did it once for Octatrack MKII, bent encoder, very hard to turn it with 1 finger.
Saw a 2nd hand, 500€ less, 35% cheaper.
Pristine not very far. Bought!
I sent the new faulty one back without talking about the problem. :expressionless:

Had obviously faulty B-Stock with TE PO33, KMI K-Board…
I guess they just check power on…

Yeah I had been living in tropics for 6-7 years by then, and I still wasn’t prepared for 98-99% humidity.

No synth ever broke on me. But, my yamaha trbx 504 bass’ truss rod nut rounded after just couple times of turning it with the provided tool. They would not take it back or send a new neck and I was so mad. Luckily I put chrome flat wounds on and set it up at the time and it is still in working condition with just a bit high action but good intonation.

UDO Super 6 Desktop:

DDS2 of one of the voice cards dead on arrival… took me a good hour to debug and fix.

Great soldering and quality control!

Roland XV-5050
Some patches/samples distort weirdly/awefully, others play fine. I’ve found a sort of repair guide a while ago but it involves reflowing the rom chips IIRC. And I dread trying this myself. No idea when it broke TBH. Turns out I used it for the same few patches for a long time which were magically unaffected.

Arturia Minibrute 1
The output is super noisy and distorted. Just happened one day. It’s a shame I really like this synth.

Two focusrite audio interfaces each with one of the two headphones out broken. Due to clumsiness on my part. Probably the easiest of them all to fix.

Mutable Instruments Braids
Broken trigger input. :frowning:

Octatrack developed a button and light fault.
Replaced the UI board, works fine ever since. 10 years still going.

Lyra 8, dodgy delay pot. They sent me a replacement pot for free, I did the repair myself. I think If bought it 2017? Still going.

SH101, power switch died, top 5 keys on the keyboard stopped working. Repaired it myself.
Made in 1983? Still works.

Nintendo switch lite, joystick died, replaced it myself. No idea when it was made, still works.

Moog sub 37 mod wheel went weird, fixed it myself. Bought it in 2016, still works.

Oh man I’ve had to send back various joy con controllers for repair at least 20 times. At least it’s free and no questions asked, but what an unreliable design.
