Did you ever owned a Moog before?
mother32 and dfam
I think DT sends note off using “note off” message, OT sends note off as velocity zero, which is where the stuck note issue can happen.
Yeah Moog grandmother is probably what fills the gap best of semi modular and good bass sounds and versatility over all. That said if you’re mostly after bass sounds and could get a different semimodular down the road it would open up your options a lot. SE02 would bring a lot of convenience with patch saving and you could do more fun sequencer stuff from the digitakt with it.
Those two are cute, but a Moog with at least two osc…man…you must try that…
Oh snap! Didn’t know that. I have a DT. I’ll test that out sometime soon.
Ok I think you all convinced me I need to hold out for a moog to just experience the real deal and have something super high quality and true to form. Gotta save up tho but I’m confident it’s going to be amazing when all is said and done
Now here is my query: Moog grandmother or subsequent 25? From what I’ve heard on demos of the grandmother has a crunchier more old-school sound which I dig. What would be the main differences between these two? Both are monophonic with two vco’s correct? Pluses and minuses?
I really dig the sound of the Minotaur too but maybe seems a little too constricted too bass duties too. Thanks!
Grandmother.
Subsequent 25 is a chopped 37. Chopped = compromise. Never compromise on synth.
The Moog Sirin is a Minitaur with more Octaves.
Yeah the sirin seems really awesome—although it’s seems like grandmother is a better bang for the buck. From what I’ve seen I can get a grandmother easily for 850 as a b-stock or mint condition used item…sirin prob goes for 900 and doesn’t seem like as much synth…am I wrong?
If I had the space, I would go for the GM.
i agree with this. When the Sirin was released it was $599. Now they go for stupid prices because it was limited edition. I guess it was alright for $599, but it’s not worth any more than that. The Grandmother gives you a keyboard, sequencer, arp, spring reverb, mod and pitch wheels, and is semi-modular. And I like the sound of the Grandmother more than the Sirin, but that is subjective.
Alright! Thanks for your input everybody—I’ve got a grandmother that should be arriving tomorrow…I’m pumped. Was able to get a b-stock unit for $814 with free shipping which I’m very satisfied with.
One follow up question specific to the grandmother. I’ve read conflicting info on the web (even on moogs own website) about the ability for the grandmother to handle instrument level input from my guitar. Does anybody plug a guitar or bass straight into the grandmother input jack, or is a preamp/ DI box of some sort absolutely necessary in this scenario?
I’m going to try “straight-in” when it arrives tomorrow but I’ve been eyeing those cheap ART tube preamps if it’s necessary—anybody use one of those? Any other solutions? Cheers everybody….I’m psyched for some psychoacoustic experience of the finest order
Yeah, very much this. It doesn’t just sound like a Moog, it sounds like a modular… which is insane and amazing and inspiring all in one!
Had the Sub25…better get the Grandma.
Oh just saw that you get the Granny. Good!
I downsized from the Grandmother to a minitaur. I love the grandma a lot. I just didn’t need a larger mono synth. Really loved the patching, the keyboard…the sound. You will dig it.
For me, the minitaur lets me do a compact setup when I want, I can quickly sequence it through the OT and I actually prefer the sound for bass. I was using the Grandmother mainly for bass so thats another reason.
Tough to go wrong with either box. I think the Grandmother is a steal if you can get one for under $1kUSD.
I’ll repeat what a lot of others have said on this thread, the Moog grandmother sounds excellent and really sounds like a vintage Moog (I’ve owned the Moog Prodigy and Moog source)
That being said don’t over look the much cheaper Novation bass station 2 it is a really phenomenal synth, it can get Moogy and it can get rolandy it can also go a lot further. Plus it’s jam packed with interesting features and I’ve seen them going for like $300 2nd hand, couldn’t recommend it more.
I currently have the grandmother and the bass station 2 and use them both heavily a love them both and they both do things that the others don’t for example the Moog really can’t perfectly do the classic UK garage bass, it gets in the ball park but it’s just not the right tone, on the other hand the Bass station 2 does it with ease. So there’s a lot of cross over being both 2 oscillator analog mono synths but they’re two different flavors
BassStation2 - so many features to list here. Simple to use. Sounds great - part moog part Roland. The distortion on it sounds awesome. AFX mode as a drum machine… mic drop
Cool that you went with the Grandmother. A while back I went with the SE02 when looking for the same thing, and ultimately found it to be more aggressive than smooth, which is probably great for a lot of people, but was not what I was looking for, so it ultimately moved on to someone else.
I have failed to bond with a lot of synths though, so it might have just been me and a lack of skills.
With respect, as someone who plays a lot of shows on synth bass, if you want the Moog sound - a Bass Station really doesn’t cut it. They do sound pretty good, and they’re excellent value for money. But they just don’t stack up next to a Phatty or a Grandmother etc. if you’re going for that kinda sound. I seem to remember someone on this forum got talked into buying a Bass Station not long ago, having asked a similar question, and was super disappointed with it
