I’ve had OT for a couple years now but have only recently started importing my stems to set up a live performance template, similar to how I used to play from Ableton.
I decided to use 6 Static stems, 1 Flex track playing sliced Rec Buffer for transitions (recording SRC3 Cue), and a master track. 4 patterns per song, 1 part per song.
I create abstract bass music which doesn’t stick to a single BPM for too long, obviously I quickly encountered the issue of slices getting messed up when trying to record a presliced buffer into different tempos.
I’ve seen this topic come up in threads over the years (Mods, feel free to merge if needed), and I think the main workaround was to avoid slices and use start position. I really want to use slices though, so I figured out a work around which I haven’t seen described here yet. Hopefully it’s useful to someone!
I started by setting up a different record buffer for each tempo I planned to use in the project, recording 4bars silence at the assigned bpm, Slice to 32 with time stretch, then save and load them into flex slots 1-8:
Buffer1 - 70bpm32slice
Buffer2 - 80bpm32slice
Buffer3 - 67.5bpm32slice
Etc as needed, If anything gets messed up, can reload these silent slices. There would be a limitation of maximum 8 BPM changes per project. This is enough for my needs
For the first pattern in each song:
-
turn off ‘Starts Silent’
-
assign the flex track to play the buffer which corresponds to the songs tempo
-
put a 1-shot recorder trig on the track which records into the chosen flex slot at that tempo
-
With 32 flex track note trigs on all odd numbered steps (1,3,5-63 etc) set linear locks to allow the buffer to play the slices 1-32 through as expected. For this tempo change transition trick to work properly, set all 32 trigs to condition “Not 1st” on the first pattern in each song.
On the last pattern for each song:
- Put a 64 length note trig on step 64, playing Flex slice 1, microtimed to the far right. This allows to recording to continue playing until a new trig happens on the flex track.
For each Part, assign scenes as per the well documented Rec Buffer Transitions Trick.
To transition between songs at different tempos:
- record any combination of stems (via Cue) into a presliced buffer at the current song tempo
- move the crossfader to a scene playing only the flex recording, remove Cue from stem tracks and now Cue only the Flex track
- manually adjust tempo to match the BPM of the next track
- select the first pattern for next song at a different BPM and hit Func+Yes to Arm All before the pattern switches. Make sure to Cue the flex track when the patterns change!
When the pattern switches, the time stretched flex buffer should still be playing from the previous pattern (old tempo), while the 1-shot Rec Trig starts recording into the new patterns record buffer (new tempo). Once that pattern loops around, the ‘not-1st’ trigs replace the flex track playback and We have successfully completed a tempo change without loosing the slice points!
I have successfully moved between several patterns and banks, carrying a recording across multiple BPMs with this method
Hopefully this description makes sense, feel free to ask any questions or if you are already using this technique please share any tricks to make this process a bit more fluid.
