Bi-weekly record-diving sampling extravaganza | 38 | Commodores - Wonderland (Long Version)

@monquixote man maybe we all should consider getting sick more often, as the return tracks seem to be massive! I wow’ed so hard when you made that switch happen and that is seriously an incredible build up/ alley-oop to that point. Thanks for sharing! :beers:

@DJCHEMIE If you’re worried about a complaint/strike, the only option that I’m aware of that will not be on a public streaming platform would be to use a cloud backup service like P-Cloud that has a media player option when sharing audio files/links (but, that’s an expensive option). :man_shrugging: Otherwise, @monquixote provided the best possible solution by recommending converting the .wav to another format. Sometimes, I’ve had trouble with that option too though, as my .mp3 would be slightly over the limit. Also, man I wouldn’t recommend splitting your song into parts, upload it as you originally intended, as it will be a better overall listening experience for everyone. There is no real deadline man, so you don’t have to worry about being late or anything! Bandcamp seems to be the “safest” public place, imo because that was the only place I could upload a remix to a song that soundcloud immediately kept taking down. I mainly use soundcloud because their player/whatever eq they run on their system tends to somewhat round off my lack of post EQing :innocent:

The moment I listened to the original track I had the arrangement in mind really, and it HAD TO be somewhat house-type… All I did was to write a little bit more notes and chords on it. I used an electric piano, some layered strings and a pad, obviously a new bassline. I added an 8 bar synth around the break…Drums only consist of snares, hats, claps given the limited time. Not sure how I feel about it now but…I definitely didn’t like the sub now that I am listening to it with fresh mind. Maybe sidechain will fix it a little but luckily it’s way down there so not bothering too much…

I didn’t want to do too much to the vocals as I really wanted to keep the singer’s feeling. It only really has a little delay and reverb. Nothing else. But if I had a week to work on this track I have some ideas. Edit: I forgot to mention the guitar in the beginning, sometimes in the middle and end is from a sample pack I have. It’s a part of a longer loop but I only used that part using Air Diode Clip to give that really stringy and annoying whiny sound

Other then basic EQ and compression, there is nothing special. This is probably the only project that I didn’t have like 35 tracks

Everything was done in MPC Software except final gain staging and automation that’s done in Ableton Standard. No mastering unfortunately…I only mixed it and adjusted the loudness.

Here is the behind the scenes  where everything is stacked on top of each other to go through the arrangement. I like using Mute/unmute to carve out the ideas at first - what goes with what etc…

Here we go in mp3 format.

That’s really good! Very clear and I like the use of auto panning. Sometimes panning makes me disoriented but you clearly know how to use it. Nice drums too!

Thanks for the MP3 suggestion! It was right there and I guess sometimes we overthink

Love this.

Sweet chill vibe and you’ve done a great job with the vocals.

@DJCHEMIE You were in the zone! Glad that you were able to get it to work, and without sacrificing chopping that beautiful jam. Agree with @monquixote that the vocals really paired nicely, amongst all the other juicy elements, and whatever you used for your BD/Kick sounds crispy :ok_hand: Thanks for sharing the flavors, and also for the peek behind the scenes, that’s a neat screenshot! :beers:

You guys I did it. Still can’t believe how, but here it is.

There is some inexplicable sparkly OT magic missing from the original project , and it actually feels like there’s a slight invisible envelope filter that got created somewhere in between. Not sure if that was my OT’s way of knowing that the project wasn’t going to be transferrable, so it gave me a fun immovable track to cover up for that fact. One could only hope that that was what its intentions were in that moment, but to be fair this is my fault and OT is chillin.

Also, was already planning on doing so, but got all the more inspired by @DJCHEMIE sharing their cool behind the scenes from their project (seriously looks intense there), to share some of the cracked out notes accompanying this project revival process while trying to make sure there were as little conflicts/correlations to whatever was causing the error on the COM project as best as possible :man_scientist: This project became both the most fun to play, and most PIA project I’ve worked on in the same week haha. Anyways, hope you guys enjoy and thanks for inspiring some upbeat jams!

edit:
Would like to add that this 2021 post from @mugwump was instrumental in helping resolve the problem with one sample’s filename being one, if not the only cause!

edit 2: Wow did I fumble the origins of the Group Home track. This is actually a remix of Supa Dupa Star, the June 1994 demo release, before they remade it into Supa Star, which was the official release on their Livin’ Proof album.

That is a wicked beat and remix @aarb420. Proper hard minimal 90s flavours :fire:

Great shuffle and production @DJCHEMIE. Sounds very very good and crispy. Especially dig the repeating chanting vocal and snare/clap groove.

That’s a headphone treat @monquixote. I can hear casisdead on this :sunglasses:

I’ve started on something in Ableton but the new 4.04 firmware dropped today so my attentions are torn

@looms hahaha it be like that sometimes  Thanks man :beers:

AIIITE! Looking forward to it man hopefully that firmware comes with some juicy new features :muscle:

That’s so tight.

I think it might be my fav thing that you’ve done. It just all sits so nicely.

@monquixote thank you man! Actually had a brief depression from not being able to transfer that file and then hearing you guys drop such massive songs didn’t help at all haha :beers:

Hopefully, that wasn’t what you were going through on your end @DJCHEMIE when trying to upload your banger!

Have you considered GitHub hosting and something like Faircamp to wrap it up to a domain? I’m still needing to redo tracks but you can see an example of my process at doomwave.com

I exported as wav and never thought about MP3. And I was like hey I spent two nights on this, if I can’t share it I am going to cry haha. Thanks to @monquixote that reminded me the obvious solution there.

@aarb420 I am listening to your track just now and even on my phone it really sounds great! You can hear all the details. Well done! It definitely has those 90s vibes and I think this song really inspired all of us here.

There is something interesting or magical about it, When you listen to the original. It sounds so simple yet there are a lot of deep elements there.

Thanks! I realized it starts a little bit louder now that I listen to it on my phone. But I am a huge fan of repeating parts of vocals like that. I take parts of longer phrases, words or sometimes combine a few of those into one repeating dreamy thing…

@thermionic cool suggestion, and your site both looks and sounds great! Are you able to share media player links with Faircamp like soundcloud/bandcamp have their players?

@DJCHEMIE haha glad it worked out man :beers: Really wish I could do the original more justice, but like you said it’s just one of those inspiring p-p-p-premier productions. I was more excited about hearing a raw version of Supa Star because I’d never heard Melachi going off on the Klan, on-air!

Knocked up another one this evening using exactly the same samples and the Polyend Tracker

The idea is it’s meant to be an undiscovered Super Mario Kart theme.

@monquixote That’s awesome man you totally captured that theme! Another PT win, every element hits at just the right spot :ok_hand: Thank you for sharing, again! :beers:

Hi, fun track to work on. Thanks for having this.
My track was done on SP 404 mk2. Added a synthbass, some leads, some drumsamples.
The mix is a realtime resample of the patterns I made.
A little Ozone in post.
I would like to get the separate audio in Cubase to make a better mix but that needs too much time.
Now I can listen to already posted tracks.
Cheers.

@electricthing, those synth melodies at about 1:56 are sooooo good :fire: Lovely smooth track.

Couple of rough and (not) ready ones from me!

Nice tight tracker sound.

DJCHEMIE; chill track

monquixote: Good sounding modern track, the riff with the stab sound was a variation from some of the riffs in the track?
