I just got the Moog as I am a big fan of its sound. I’ve had an A4 for about 6 months now and am really enjoying it. I would like to use them together and I am torn between the following:
Syncing the Moog’s clock to the A4 and using it’s built in sequencer which seems very nice. I am concerned this might not work as easily for chaining patterns together to build songs which is a big part of my workflow.
Sacrificing a track on the A4 to sequence the Moog via midi. I have a Prophet for pads and a Rytm for drums so I don’t mind giving up one track. I’m assuming I would have to sacrifice two tracks to play paraphonically if that’s even possible? Using the Elektron sequencer is appealing to me because of how easy it is to build long, chained patterns. This seems easy to set up which is a plus.
Sequencing the Moog via CV which sounds great but maybe a bit too complicated, as I have never done anything with CV. I came across a few threads with people struggling to get this setup to work with the 37/Minitaur and A4. I could easily see this becoming me. I think sequencing anything beyond pitch, velocity and note length would probably be overkill for me. I can always twist knobs while it runs but who knows.
I’m pretty much looking to use the Moog to cover bass duties as well as for the occasional lead or drone. I play mostly ambient music in a duo.
To anyone out there using a similar setup, I would be really interested in hearing how you go about this as I weigh the pros and cons. Sorry if anything isn’t quite making sense! I am still fairly new to electronic music. Thanks!
If you’re not using the CV track on the A4 for anything currently, you can put note data on it, and send MIDI pitch, velocity, and note length to the Sub37. I think this dates from OS 1.40 (Oct 2019) so earlier posts may suggest more complicated workarounds.
The CV channel will now send midi out no?, havnt tried duo phonic as i only have a sub phatty plugged into the A4MKII…it will also send clock for tempo synced lfos and sequencer…
soooo midi out for note value data and then 4 channels of automated CV control over -
The filter with plockable envelope settings over attack decay sustain release…
Pitch with lfo for crazy plockable FM per step
Vol for plockable AM
Gate…fn trigger extra plockable ratcheting gates that ping the internal envs and lfos
Thanks everyone for the replies. I was confused about how the midi out works on the A4 because of my experience with the Rytm. As long as I’m understanding correctly I can send midi out to the Moog without sacrificing a track by using the CV track. That leaves the CV outs to potentially expand upon this as I get more comfortable with the workflow. This sounds great, thanks!
I agree that playing the Moog is the way to go in general. However, my hands are sometimes busy with a guitar and those sequenced bass lines are quite a nice, distinct sound as well.
