My Digitakt arrived the other day and will take it’s place next to the Digitone, and I’m curious if there’s a prefered way to route them together.
I’ve been thinking about it and there’s probably a few ways to connect them together. But is one way better for various reasons?
Digitakt into Digitone? or Digitone into Digitakt for sampling chords perhaps? or, continue to run Digitone through the computer and use the stereo 3/4 outs for the Digitakts inputs and route Digitone into it that way? This way means I can also sample from Ableton / the computer into Digitakt.
Then I watched a youtube clip where I guy was going from Digitakt into Digitone, I was confused why he preferred it that way, but it seemed to be something about the Digitone’s effects. The Digitakt has it’s own effects, so that didnt make much sense.
Am I missing something?
Would love to know how you guys prefer to set them both up and route things when using them together with a DAW.
Audio? Midi? Ins / Outs. etc etc.
Thanks so much and apologies for a ramble of a post.
When I’m using just the Digitakt and Digitone, I like to route the DT into the DN because its FX can be applied to the input, and you can pan the inputs left and right. The The DT monitors the inputs in mono, and you can’t apply its FX to incoming audio.
When I’m using the them together with a DAW, I like to route the DN into the DT. While you can’t monitor in stereo on the DT, you can access the DT’s inputs as two mono tracks or one stereo track in a DAW, and sometimes I want to add different FX plugins on the DT’s and DN’s audio. You won’t be able to use the DN’s FX on the DT this way, though.
As for midi, I always put the DT’s midi out into the DN’s midi in. This is because I like to use the Digitakt’s mute mode to mute both machines. It’s very convenient when all the mute buttons are close together.
My pleasure, man. I’m using the Digitakt as an audio interface, so where you’d normally select your inputs, there should be a stereo “Main L/R out” track, 8 mono tracks, 2 mono input tracks and a stereo input track. I use FL Studio, so that list shows up in the top right corner of the mixer window. I’m not using the Overbridge plugin, but you do need to have Overbridge installed to use the DT as an audio interface and want access to these tracks. I haven’t tried the class compliant USB thing, but from what I hear you don’t get access to the inputs separate from the DT’s own outputs.
I think that’s the most straight forward solution, and you’ll get to use the Digitone’s chorus, delay, reverb and master overdrive on the Digitakt.
I haven’t tried Overbridge plugin much, but it should give you access to all the tracks separately via the plugin, without having to use the DT or DN as an audio interface. You just need to have the DT and DN connected via USB. I had trouble using it, but I think I just need to read the manual or watch some tutorials and give it another try
I imagine it’s been said but DT in Stereo through DN, that’s what I did. Then you can always use the headphone out on DN to route sampling back into DT.
Thanks Eaves.
So I’ve set it up this way, and it looks like I have to turn up the inputs on the master channel on the Digitone on every pattern as the settings are stored on a per pattern basis.
Is there anyway to make this a master setting? or do I just need to go through each pattern and change them manually and resave all my digitone patterns to have these inputs turned up?
The master page settings are saved per pattern, so you’ll have to copy the settings. Hold FUNC+LFO+COPY to copy the master page settings. This can be a bit finicky, just make sure you’re copying the master page and not the LFO page. Then switch patterns and FUNC+LFO+PASTE for every pattern. If you’re starting a new project and set up the master page, when you copy-paste the pattern you’ll have the same master page settings on the new pattern, too.
I resurrect this old thread, after the DT update:
I used to route the DT into the DN (and use the FX of the DN). But I wonder, if someone switched to “DN into DT” after the firmware update of the DT (and the possibility to use the stereo thru of the DT)?
DN into DT all the way now. Very nice to have the master compressor at the end of the chain. The DN inputs sometimes get the op-1 or some guitar, which can then also be sampled by the DT. Wouldn’t want it the other way around now.
Funny how since the DT 1.30 update the tables have turned! I guess you have to ask yourself whether the DN’s master distortion is more useful to you than the DT’s master compressor and sampler…
