Wondering what’s your favourite Korg synth or any device, what’s the story of your relationships with those machines, what are most known examples of Korg synths used in music and artists and how would you describe that unique K sonic footprint?
I got Mono/Poly in late 90s and still have it, after some time it started to sounds a bit “too korgy” - not fast enough ENVs, a bit softer sound than Moog or Roland, a bit “alternative”, comparing to other machines of that era, but at the same time really pleasant to play. Give 2 -3 pedals and you can spend endless nights with it. Filter is very liquid and fun, synth has cv/gate/filter input, so cool to have small analog sequencer with it. I would also love to mod mine for some more cv parameters, maybe to make a kind of Matriarch out of it : )
I believe Korg M/P is perfect for atmospheric a bit “faded out” sounds and some strange sequences.
I would really love to get original MS-20 and/or new Minikorg 700fs. I believe they are really inspiring machines, sound so distinct. Also I kinda liked MS2000 for a bit thin but inspiring sound. Would love to see cool new VA with a lot of knobs from K.
I really liked the Korg Triton I tried at a synth nerd party. It wasn’t mine though.
I still like the MS-20 Mini, Opsix, and Wavestate that I do own. Each does something completely different than the other two so I can’t say which is the best.
just checked - strangely prices for MS2000 are quite high now. 600 - 1000$ for keyboard and 400 - 600 for rack, at least locally… Seems like ppl finally start to like it. Maybe I should get before they go for 3000 - 7000$ : )
I’d like to have a MS-20 as companion in my studio but at the same time i could get a Korgasmatron but then im shifting. Much love for this stuff seems super cool. Bit low on funds because im moving soon.
What kind of music and type sounds you do with Polysix? I guess it’s quite nice for 80s / synthwave / neo romantic stuff, seen a few… Same filter as M/P but otherwise very different machine.
I started with the DW-8000. There’s a plugin version now that’s really good, allows you to automate every parameter. The presets are a trip lol I love it so much. I also had the EA-1, which was a lot of fun for its time. Odd to see that one and the ER-1 have some kind of nostalgia nowadays but they were good boxes
The Poly 61 and the Poly 800 both seem kind of vanilla, yet as stated above, add a few pedals and you have some really nice stuff. The Poly 61 definitely goes to BOC town, and the joystick on these are fun.
The Poly 61 is really special if you invest the time it takes to program one.
It’s one of the synths I think of when I think “analog” sounding in spite of it being DCO’s. It just sounds very aggressive electronic unless you know how to tame that into extra creamy pads and such.
The 800 Hawk Mods seem even better, never had one tho.
Years ago I had the MS2000, loved it in the 90’s, I don’t miss it.
My friend swears by the Poly Six, he definitely gets great sounds out of them.
I’d LOVE an older MS20 MS10 and the VC10, those seem wildly different than what I currently have
It’s does dusty droney stuff very well, the way the filter breaks up is nice and grainy, it’s generally darker than the Juno 60 sound, but you can get very textured crystalline highs also. The resonance is quite pure and tracks the keyboard kind of wonky no matter how you set it - great for weird percussive or clonky sounds. The keybed is problematic, it is not insanely versatile in terms of modulation (1 envelope, 1 sine lfo) but if you like the sound it doesn’t matter. It can also be a bit nasaly. And unfortunately it has one of the worst pitchbend wheels I’ve ever encountered.
I’ve had it for 25+ years (modded about 6 years ago). I learned how to synth on this, a yamaha cs-5, and an arp avatar lol.
All their old analogs are classic in book. I’d love to try some of their funkier pre-M1 80s stuff.
