Behringer RD-8

Getting back on topic (yawn) there is a new manual on their website that lists all the v2.02 firmware features.

Worth pointing out that the firmware is still being developed further with an active topic for suggestions/requests/clarification on another forum.

In case you ever wondered what it would sound like if you replaced Phil Collins with an RD-8… The good part starts at 1:46

I’m debating either modding or replacing my RD-8, for those seeking in the area of 808 but allowing for more modulation or branching out, what did you replace yours with (or what did you buy instead?)

I guess I parted ways with the TR-08 when I realized I was just using the samples of it on my DT was easier. I also have been pretty chuffed with how the model:cycles works as a drum machine.

I sold my first one thinking I’d just use samples. I missed it almost immediately.

I don’t like actual 808 workflow. I like a modern take that’s still synthesis.

So anything like the RD-8, TR-8, TR-8S is great for me. I’m going to mod the kick on mine. The wave designer doesn’t have the right feel IMO. I absolutely love the rest of the RD-8.

Hello everyone! We made a review of the RD-8 using the newest firmware. We give a complete tour of the machine while showing lots of useful features along the way. This might be interesting to you as well if you’re waiting for Behringer’s RD-9 (which was now finally announced) since the two machines supposedly share the same firmware and - judging from what can be seen in the announcement video - the operation will be practically the same.

Nice blind comparison:

After I saw the results, I can’t really tell which one I like better though… it changes from pattern to pattern.

There are lots of improvements in the new 2.1.2 firmware update, some of which were recommended by us to Behringer! We did a quick tour of them all if you’re interested. Also, we share some ideas on how to make the RD-8 even better.

I’ve just carried the (very easy) mod detailed by maffez to the hats (more body) and kick drum (longer release) both work very well.
Source doc is here. Behringer RD-8 Mods – maffez synth mods
Here’s a pic of the mod

I’m not in any hurry to buy one, but I am thinking it’d be nice to have 808 sounds that I can process with cheap guitar pedals. I don’t know if I have the space in the studio though. It would depend on how much money I make over the holidays. Sometimes I loathe 808s no thanks to every Trap rapper, but that’s not the 808’s fault. But I do own the RD6 & RD9, and the TD3 & TD3MO, so if I picked one up I’d probably look into a proper stand to keep the Behringers on.

Or maybe it’s time to get a TR8S.

it was 3 years ago, I know, but this is such a wise thought, i had to repost it. Maybe it is even wiser in this context of passing time

I need to print and frame that to put on my studio wall. Thank you for reposting!

It’s a good musing, do I want sound design? Do I want to focus more on neat and stirring concept? Am I just wanting to complete more songwriting exercises?!

I will always get enjoyment from new sounds, but maybe I need to treat my attention with as much coin-counting as my bank account? ā€œBudgetā€ in terms of how much time I’ve spent on deeper dives into my existing gear…

I can understand , GAS is a simple path, maybe not forward, but with unlimited paths I can walk it almost sounds like a way out of being stuck. Though I do get stuck further!

I’ve picked up ā€œThe Songwriting Decksā€ and working on some training at the end of the month. I also try to not beat myself up, sometimes you gotta get by in a stressful time when it’s easier to acquire currency than it is to find time away from attention drains and unnecessary complexity.

Some brought upon myself certainly, but that was always going to happen as I’m wired.

Now as part of Jeff Mills’ live setup, along with 2x TR-909

I’m getting Herbie vibes from this and that’s no bad thing!

I read in the manual that the mono out is TRS. Does that mean you have to have a TRS to 2xTS cable, for example when you connect it to a mixer?

Great observation!

Rumour has it Behringer also made 2x custom RD9s in replica cases for the performance
