Neutron is my favourite analog synth. I have had many but Neutron is the most interesting. I love its noisy nature especially. So interesting that I actually just ordered a second unit. Intentions: stereo, ambient madness.
I might build a smol behringer euro utility/modulation/fx rack for them but we’ll see. They don’t really need much else, maybe LFOs but I can always use the assign out and LFO from Digitone. So much fun and they are cheap as heck second hand.
Nice, that’s probably the best looking skin I’ve seen, and there are many! I am actually crazy and love my red OG skin It is annoying that my two neutrons have different shades of red though…
(after obtaining a Neutron)
How the hell are people selling these for $200
It sounds great unpatched, fat oscillators, juicy filter, very taken with the drive and delay. I do not mind the noisy delay line or the trashy quality of the drive, I have plenty of digital options for clean/polite sounds. Excellent build quality, I got the one with the metallic red faceplate and wooden end cheeks.
Patching it is great and I am going to need more patch cables. Already impressed by the weird self-oscillating/generative results even with a single LFO. Too bad you can’t modulate delay feedback and some little things like that, but it’s so expressive that I don’t mind at all. I haven’t been using the sequencer much at all yet because it’s so much fun as a drone/noise machine.
I suggest printing the key combinations from the manual. There are ton of hidden functionality such as one shot lfos, midi sync lfos, lfo depth, etc.
And yeah, it is of great value. I use my stereo setup for noisy ambient most often too. There really is a Neutron signature sound (even attenuated pre filter and without drive) that some don’t like, but I love it.
It’s strange that a good thing (functionality/flexibility) feels like one of the few downsides with it … it’s possibly no issue if you use it day in day out … flash cards are a good idea
my other gripe is the tiny white dot on the many shiny knobs is really hard to eyeball and read at a glance (at my age anyway) … plus i have a constant roadblock about the ADSR ordering … Env1 should be for the filter (not the VCA) in my book !
Plus it’s an outlier on their synths in that it has its own app (not found via SynthTribe) and the flashing of firmware feels more risky
I also had issues gating it from their Pro-1 … so i think there’s an electrical design issue with that circuit somehow
Not so sold on the sync sound, but the oscillators are very flexible
Quirks can work too … It takes you in different directions and having a cv’d delay is always going to be a win for lofi grit … the filters are interesting, so yeah, on the whole it’s definitely its own thing and inspiring
No chance of remembering those even with daily use here!
I did replace couple of pot hats but could not find hats with D shape hole so not the greatest fit, but probably they could be found. I used those guitar pot hats that you screw on.
I also had problems gating (or CV, can’t remember) it from System-1m, but other Neutron and my Spice seem to work. I remember reading something about some of the inputs requiring not your typical eurorack voltage. The input ranges are listed in the manual if someone smarter wants to see. It actually started going very wonky but a reboot fixed it.
One nice thing is that you can modulate filter using modwheel or aftertouch, and then there is assign out. Couple of free midi to cv converters that I can tweak from my Digitone!
I do wish there were some more points to modulate. On Neutron you easily end up modulating osc and lfo shapes, lfo speed and trig and it yields very experimental results. I like but can’t but wonder how I could augment it (well…them) sometimes. Maybe loan some ideas from Proton, wave folder and some loopable envelopes could be cool.
Poly chain is a really nice addition! I thought it needed USB to work, but no. Some 4 note paraphonic chord action sounding very gritty.
Yes, that jumped out at me within a couple of hours of plugging it in. I guess I’ll start hearing it everywhere now
What really impressed me about it is the very rich selection of oscillator/LFO shapes and the ability to morph and even reconfigure them. It’s such a refreshing change the usual 3 waveforms + supersaw or the current wavetable fad. I do very much like wavetables, but I’m also happy to have all these intermediate shapes on VCOs as well as the extended frequency range options, lots of strange tones to explore.
It’s insane. I did a little scroll through all the Behringer “expanders” on Thomann, and if you see for how little money you can buy the most insane synth capability, wow… kobol, pro-800, pro-1, Toro, syncussion, model-d, model-15, arp 2600 etc.
