Behringer K-2 ( & K2 MKII)

I saw them live playing that and using the MS20 at the end. It sounded fantastic.

FM on this sounds really cool.

It does sound great, also v/oct opens it up to modular integration which was difficult before. I wonder if the switch in scaling has affected the behaviour of the more complex/weird self generating type patches?

I read somewhere that you can ping the ms-20 filter and that it sounds amazing but I couldn’t find any example of it.
Can you also do it with the K2 and can I hear an example ?

Amazona .de runs a detailed review of the Mk-2, if you have the time to really read it.

Google translate does a good job with it.

??

If you can configure it on the Edge via the app you sure as hell can on ms20.

The MS20 is almost certainly a very different proposition, it’s not possible on any of the Korg reissues (even without keys) - i am kinda expecting Behringer to have followed this as it seems intrinsic to the original design - but want a user to confirm (still awaiting fbk from MT) - high note priority is a bit of a hassle

There’s a known issue which may be batch-specific or general whereby the filter resonance of K-2’s Mkii Filter 1 pair (the aggressive ones) will progressively fade after about an hour of use … it restores after a reboot, then fades after about an hour - seems well discussed on ModWiggler and Sequencer.de and confirmed by Behringer on a Facebook post (requires return to retailler to fix, but also may be a simple user intervention like the S/H issue on Model 15 …

This is worth keeping in mind if interested (as i am) although i am still more interested to learn if the SynthTribe app allows the user to set Last Note Priority ?

I’ve had confirmation it is possible on the original K-2 so it’s basically a given on the update

Have you or anyone here heard if this issue has been resolved for the MkII?

I miss having an MS-20 and I’ve got one of these on the way!

FWIW I bought my K-2 mkII used on Reverb and it did not have this issue when it arrived. Because it was used I don’t know the batch it came from. It was the first thing I checked lol

There is a lot of inconclusive or discreditable feedback on this, I think a methodical method can be used, but most people aren’t that methodical… I found it easy to test to be in no doubt that the resonance died significantly over time

I also look with interest towards this newer version, but haven’t had any confirmation it’s risk free so it will be interesting to hear your evaluation, I can’t recall if I detailed steps above, but there is a way to test it on the device using the ESP as a ‘meter’

Set it up and come back to it in an hour and ideally record it as a backup

Well it’s in the mail!
I’ll happily run some tests to see and will share here when it arrives.

If I find or devise that method I’ll try it.

I’ll probably do some recordings at different times with the same settings and share here. If you remember the ESP method I’ll gladly try that too.
I’m reading through a Modwiggler topic on the issue too out of curiosity.

Here! From user rotallicso:
“the test uses one cable to keep the VCA open and one cable from output to signal in of ESP - use the peak indicator to get the signal input level just over flickering and into steady - that way if the level is dropping (single filter resonance sounding only) you get a qualitative indication from the Peak indicator going out”

Makes sense and is easy to set up and leave alone a while.

FWIW, my first K2 (mk1) arrived mostly working but with something nonfunctional. Sweetwater replaced it ASAP and I’ve had zero problems with the K2 since.

A reasonable hypothesis that fits the imperfect data is that B* is keeping costs low by cutting corners in QA/Supply and so sometimes you get a bad unit. In that case, it’s best to buy from a local vendor who will let you try the unit out before putting money down. If that’s not possible, then an online vendor that has a reputation for customer service.

After the K2, I’ve given up on trying to make any “value” arguments when making synth purchases. Once you get a good unit, the K2 punches well above its weight before you even consider the cost. If not for space limits, I’d buy at least three more.
