Behringer JN-80

You could probably say the same about many classic synths and drum machines. The counterpoint is that the charactersics that made the original instruments sound special are still special today. New guitars are still made and the sound is quite established :woman_shrugging:

The analog Junos make a distinct and evocative polysynth sound, even if it is heavily reliant on the chorus effect. I have other synths and if my Juno got stolen I would buy another. The filter alone is amazing, who can deny it

But there’s a whole industry devoted to ways to manipulate the sounds of guitar in order to make them sound different. There’s a term for people who try to make their guitar sound the same as worn out, overplayed sounds; hacks.

And couldn’t those same tools be used to manipulate the sound of this new synth to produce sounds that aren’t worn out and overplayed?

When I listened to the demos, I heard most of the brass and string sounds that I liked from my departed Rev 2. And I definitely see the draw of this interface compared to the Deepmind, where you don’t have to worry about lots of secondary functions and weird envelope curves. Korg may want to go ahead and dig a grave for the OG Minilogue because I think the JN80 is going to kill it

I honestly liked the old name more

Triggering the JN-80 arpeggiator from a voltage trigger source using the TR8-S, in this case.

I’d love to hear this A/B’d with the System 8 plug out. I’ve only for the 106 installed in mine but with ACB it would be interesting to see how they sound side by side

It doesn’t. The Korg minilogue (OG) has much more going on overtones, complexity etc. But I really like the JN-80 for what it is. Easy access. Classic sounds. PWM. (Too bad no added chord memory or sequencer (like UB-X)).

Oh - and btw. Really well built. Only the buttons look like CR-8000 deep press softly buttons but aren’t (microswitches). Hope they last (at least the + and -). The faders are pretty nice - feel wise.

Probably the same, or different in a meaningless way. If you like the sound of the System 8 already then it really doesn’t matter.

This is a lovely synth if you want to buy a Juno in 2026, but the ā€˜sound’ is available for the price of 3 coffees, you buy this to have the hardware.
