I wonder why they changed small things like the metal shafts from the crave. Money I guess . I haven’t looked to see o the crave and edge retail for a similar price.
Without a doubt, there’s more than 2 times the amount on it relative to crave. Both retail the same, give or take.
I don’t have any reason to be overly concerned for longevity, but the resistance is just too high (especially with textureless knob caps). I reckon they overspecced the resistance to compensate for the change to create a ‘feel’ of sturdiness
It’s too easy to loose hours to this, just experimenting. It’s a lot of fun just twisting knobs and patching.
However… As easy as it is to be stumbling into nice sounds and sequences, I’ve found it equally easy to just get really lost and struggle to even land on something I like.
I think I need to be systematic about learning this using one of the extensive DFAM tutorial series available on YouTube, so I’m not blinding fiddling.
yeah. I imagine there’s a ninja level available once you REALLY know what everything is doing, huh?
Feel like I need to work out the FM bit a bit more as it never has the effect I am expecting, and often seems to do nothing much at all!
Definitely SUPER FUN.
Did a live performance at an open mic with it about four hours after I bought it. Not sure that was THAT wise, but no-one threw anything and someone actually came up to tell me it was good, so.
this plus a drum machine feels like almost enough to jam out whole tracks. Probably quite brutal, minimal boring tracks, but WHO’S COMPLAINING.
Only problem is, I am almost 100% definitely going to end up buying another semi-modular synth* to pair with it. I’m getting terrible visions of a big case full of modular and me with no shoes or teeth.
- sort of already wanted an 0-Coast.
said rough & messy live improv, just in case anyone’s super bored.
This thing is so wild. You think it’s kinda basic to start with and then… all hell breaks loose lol. Was having a lot of fun with one of the oscs routed back into the audio in modulating the filter, with FM, got some really crazy textures with a beat under it. Like, nothing I’d expect from this simple architecture.
So cool and all the more fun because I was pretty much just dicking around twisting knobs! I do get that it’s hard to tame… but I equally find that when I lose a sweet spot, there’s another lurking round the corner and it might be even crazier. Just need to keep recording - I wish it had USB audio so I could hook it up to my iPad directly and just record! Maybe I should use my Zoom.
Has anyone found a good use for the noise yet? I can’t really make good use of it. Kinda want to use it like hi hats but if you route the trigger to it, it’s too short, and if you route envelopes to it it’s too loud. Would be interested to hear of some good uses
Is it to be assumed that this is currently not available in the States? All sites I’m looking at are saying “Preorder Only”.
Lemme know if I’m totally missing an outlet selling these.
Available in the U.S. around Dec. 2023-Jan.2024.
I ordered one from Sweetwater on August 17. It was shipped on September 27. I do not know when someone who orders one today will get it.
Is anyone using a decksaver with this? Do the crave ones fit?
You could probably just buy a second edge and put it on top
pretty sure they won’t, as no knobs on the bottom of the Crave and no room there in the decksaver.
Although outside chance it will upside down I spose…
True but that could be a double-edge sword.
I just took a closer look at photos of the crave cover . I didn’t realise it drops down where the sequencer is. My bad with a stupid question.
Hope they eventually make one for the Edge
there are no stupid questions!
Pretty sure they will come up with an Edge one, probably just giving Behringer time to sell a load first.
worse, then you’re going to have to get one to put on top of the one you just bought.
and then…, eventually…
INFINITE EDGE
I’ve never used a DFAM, but I’m pleased with the nasty sounds I’m getting from the Edge. The color is great. Actual midi support is a big point in Edge’s favor. Paired up with a Syntakt or Drumbrute, you’re ready to make techno.
I have one coming to the US from Thomann this week. I used to use the DFAM a lot. What I hate was the price, plus no MIDI meant I had this elaborate chain from DAW to modular clock divider and then into DFAM. Once I sold my modular I was done with the DFAM as well. It also IMO was expensive for what it was. I saw Bastl making a little Kastle drum which was not as featured but a pretty nice little fill in for $100.
But the Edge is exciting to me since I can run audio into it and step sequence the filter, which is a modular trick I have missed. It has MIDI in and out plus it actually resets! So my main focus with this will be running stuff into the audio in and using the filter, but of course I will use it for percussion as well. I will sync it to my digitakt, sample and chop it up. So I think for the price, this is a really great deal.
I say this before it shows up, so let’s see if it delivers for me.
Got mine today and it’s awesome. Like the dfam it is a hi hat machine. But with the midi it pairs perfectly with the digitakt.
I also sent audio from the Lyra-8 into it. I made a G min chord with 4 oscillators and then put the hold up so it droned. Fed it into the edge and turned up velocity on step1 only and shaped the sound.
The envelopes on this are amazing and snappy so I was able to turn the lyra into a stab machine. Freaking sweet to have a rich analogue stab like that.
I sampled into the digitakt and tightened it up even more. Then I made a percussion loop on the edge and am adding another to compliment the stab and digitakt tracks. I record a clean 4 bars from the edge into the DT then set it to slice mode and randomize until I get something cool. Fantastic work flow.
Figure I’ll use my digitone in sync and just keep building up the track.
Anyway for $200 it’s so good. Better than dfam to me since it resets and has midi. Plus you can divide the clock easily as well. I loved the dfam too but it was so expensive. The edge feels like a steal for the price.
for any of you in the US that have been waiting for the Edge to be available here…Sweetwater now has a limited inventory in!
