Just discovered this myself and was about to post. They are good quality too. Local libaries used to lend the CD’s and tapes out years ago.

Time to re-install J downloader again.

So, don’t post this around everywhere, but I made a script that retrieves the files one by one automatically. I told a couple people I did it and they also wanted it, so I put it up on github.

Read all of the README please. https://github.com/andrew-e/bbc-sound-effects

It’s an incredibly impressive collection of sounds from what I was able to see and hear but the site is getting absolutely hammered so loading times even in the UK are rapidly increasing.

Dread to think what the bandwidth bill will be!

Found this link on Reddit today. Lots of good food for samplers here:

edit: oops. it was already here

Regarding the recent BBC release:

I looked at the license they offer, and it didn’t look amenable to musical use, even non-commercial. Since the BBC page invited “queries regarding usage” I wrote to them.

They replied that the BBC library was already available under a license that would allow musical use. The library is $5,000, available at:

They do offer a smaller “historical” collection, that appears to be about the same size as the recent release, for only $1,200.

In short, the free library isn’t licensed for re-sampling, re-mixing, or musical use.

very cool! Thanks!

Given that UK residents who use the BBC have to pay the BBC a compulsory licence fee it should be public domain and free to use, since the creators were already paid for the work.
