I was so glad I got mine for less than a lot a few years ago (from a friend, so he gave me a good price) - they’re such fun devices, if also entirely annoying – as far as the sequencer and particularly not being able to save anything goes – even when modded like mine with various extra cv/gate i/o. The Tubbutec upgrade does look tempting though.
If you have the kenton mods kit, I believe it all still works with the tubbutec processor installed. the only thing that I kind of dislike is that it has you cut some traces on the dinsync auxiliary board so it’s not 100% reversible, but that’s probably the only way to repurpose the same pcb and existing din ports for midi.
I like the idea of the microtuning versions of their kits, but I think that I’m too lazy to make use of it since it requires the equivalent of sample prep but for scales and precise tunings.
Yeah, I read that on the Tubbutec website about the mod; I’ve actually got no idea which mods they are, but they do replace the original cv/gate to fix the issues with that, and apparently that indicates the Tubbutec mod will work OK.
I lack the soldering skills for a project like this, so would have to send it off to Tubbutec in Germany to do the mod as I’m not sure my local synth tech would be any cheaper.
(I’m not sure when this should move to the Roland MC-202 thread; but it was on Bad Gear.)
This is probably just the mod which bypasses the original processor chip (sequencer) and connects them directly to the synth, that’s why it fixes the issue you (and pilz) describe. It’s like a fair use mod or whatever you call it, a mod published for common use by the creator. Kenton mods is several other 3.5mm i/o holes you have to drill for various c/v points.
I might open up the 202 at some point to have a gander, but it comes with cv/gate and extra patch points for portamento and filter cutoff. It might also be a DIY mod as well for all I know.
I laughed way too hard at Dumbbell DAW. ![]()
That’s a severe hard kick
I broke into audible laughter at the very first zinger. He was on fire in this episode. While some of the “press one key and turn a knob” stuff sounded good to me, the jams felt very generic, and I know he is capable of pulling a lot out of limited devices, so I don’t blame him. He didn’t credit any of his usual loan sources, so I wonder what his arrangement was with this one…?
I knew this was coming - too much shit was lost over this synth. Is the first newish piece of gear he’s done that’s more or less unobtanium at the time the review drops?
lots of great zingers in here
but in all seriousness, the mentioning that he asks himself “if the instrument is unfinished or just inherently broken” is an experience that i think we can all relate to when it comes to pretty much any recent gear purchase- this seems to be an unfortunate (and for some reason accepted) universal trend
this image definitely hits a little too close to home when it comes to those of us in this specific forum
He threw out a few hadoukens, no doubt about that. I would have liked to hear it used as a complex mono synth, one would imagine it’s really well suited to that but sat so bloaty in the mix as a poly it was kinda hard for me to believe. It sounded a lot better in the last jam, which he does in the daw, so bugs aside it does seem like a nice synth but I’d probably buy a different one if I could afford a $4000 purchase right now.
Listening to those jams, I wish I could go back to a simpler time in my life. In particular, a time when I didn’t find stock samples of people saying “yeah” mortally embarrassing
I have so far escaped owning a Volca. After watching this, I went back to his episode on the Volca Drum, two years ago. Someday I will find one for fifty currency units…
The Drum is glorious
(I have absolutely no interest in the others)
Volca Bass is pretty swell too. Rebought it after many years and still very happy with it, also for noodling and coming up with fat basslines.
