My order from the 2nd batch was delivered right after I left town for six weeks, so I just unboxed it today. My serial number is right in the middle of the range that was impacted. However, the notice about the missing components was sent June 12th and my unit didn’t ship until June 28th.
It’s hard to think Brian was still shipping units known to be affected and not addressing them before they were shipped out. Did anyone here have something similar? Did you test and find the unit was fine even though it was within that impact range of serial numbers?
I’ll test for sure, but just curious if anyone else experienced the same.
The new one seems like it’s inconsistent behavior. I’ve just been testing and comparing it to my other one. When I try to control the filter via midi CC, it’s not smooth at all. There’s only a small usable range between like 30 values and it just wildly jumps when outside of that range. My older unit has the range and feels like you’d expect. I can program filter CV values, and it audibly changes, but it doesn’t seem right.
Oh well, I’ll have to decide if I want to send it back or repair it myself. I think I might send it back if he’s being responsive. I don’t know if don’t feel like messing with it.
I highly recommend sending it over to him. I’m not even based in the states, but I had a really smooth transaction with him. Just message him on the site contact and give him a few days to reply.
You know, I’ll go through these steps just to make sure with mine. I don’t recall it being responsive but hey, it’s worth not wasting my time if it is functioning properly.
If your 6th run Avalon is in this range it may be affected. It can be tested in two ways:
Program filter CV offsets as described in section 5.2.4.6 of the reference manual. If you do not hear the filter cutoff changing it is likely the resistor is missing.
Control the Avalon filter cutoff via MIDI CC. If it doesn’t work the resistor may be missing (option 1 is likely better as it doesn’t depend on other hardware & software).
I recently acquired an Roland MC-202 with the 2oh2 mod for a bit more than a new Avalon, but considerably less than a 2nd hand .
It can’t get quite as juicy as the 303, but the versatility more than makes up for it and feels way more worth it to me.
Yeah I am tempted but the idea of selling my Avalon when it comes in and getting a 202 and doing the 2oh2 mod. Speaking of have any units being delivered on recently? seems things have totally stalled out again.
I got mine a few months ago, but I’ve only briefly taken it out of the box to test it. It’s one of the ones with missing components. Otherwise, I haven’t used it at all and it’s been back in the box.
It’s a second unit for me, one I meant to hold onto for an extended period. I don’t know if I’ll send it back for repairs or attempt it myself. Given the situation overall, I’ll probably do the latter.
Sorry for those still waiting, I know the feeling all too well.
