how the hell were they doing this stuff in 1989. The attention to detail is crazy.

R8
202
101
Juno 106 (a lot of it )
Atari st and notator/cubase probably
606

There are some old interviews around (future music etc ) from that era.

A lot of the tapes sounded nice but there were very familiar sounds/section that can be heard on incunabula, I think they could’ve released some as extra tracks / 12 inches around that time but their sound did quickly develop , moving on from this type of work , so I think it would’ve quickly sounded ‘old’ by their standards.
I think incunabula still sounds unique in many ways , some of the melodies / bits on these tapes is very much early 90’s , some rave/house style stabs.
Overall I do think these tapes were one of the highlights of the warp 30 nts sessions though I tend to prefer this era of warp/autechre.

I know what you mean about sounding ‘familiar’ but it’s done so well.
I had access to an Amiga with Octamed via my cousin who was deep into the rave scene and I latched onto that (I was probably 10-11 years old at the time). I could never get anything as complex or evolving from it.
This stuff is candy to my ears.

I love this whole era of Warp! Listening to it on Winamp in the states or Groovetech “radio” such amazing beatsmiths

I think you’re spot on with how those familiar patterns and sounds could’ve been something else way back when. And I guess you’re right that they were just constantly on the search for the new which is has been a key part of their appeal to me right the way up until now.

But it sure is fun to hear those well known parts weaved in amongst different contexts.

Loads of conditioner trigs, ‘trigless trigs’ and plocked arps. as well as like, loads of differing scale lengths.
and stuff…
also a dx100 with a dodgy output
boss 1/2 19"delay
and a eps16 that had its circuitboard tagged and sprayed so much it virtually analogically played it’ssen

I much prefer this stuff (and Lego Feet) to Incunabula, which just sounds kinda watered down and too clean (obviously with a few exceptions) in comparison. Also I can hear a lot of inspiration from 80s industrial, which I didn’t know they were into that early on.

Did anyone grab the other tape that was posted on watmm? One of the tracks could pass as goth synthpop with the right vocal!
edit: just noticed link I posted to a mastered version was temporary; I’ll try to reupload somewhere more permanent later.

I heard a lot of influeneces from 89 ish , some melodies and noises were like lfo , other rave / dance stuff that I’d hear before incunabula came out
I’m guessing the vast majority was done before / made at the same time and a few bits were them figuring out new material for follow up 12’s or even remixes of other people / their own tracks.

There’s a lot of ratcheted r8 snares , hihats , Juno pads ( many of which should like the presets I had in my old Juno ).

They’ve done interviews since which talked about the custom firmware on their sampler though that seems like it was available publicly , it’s just at that period the internet / sharing things was quite tricky.
Much of my early gear list was influenced by autechre / warp style artists , I had r8,202,Juno etc.

What other tape that was posted on watmm? Am I missing something because I didn’t login - been ages since i did there tbh. I’ve got the part 1 and part 2 that were broadcast on Warp30.

Ah yes, sorry, forgot to reupload it. Remastered version is here.
